This South African-designed 4-wheeled, all-wheel-drive vehicle saw extensive service in North Africa, being the only armoured car available in sufficient numbers to Commonwealth divisions. It had a reputation as a dependable vehicle--if somewhat light and undergunned. The 5,746 units produced appeared in multipe variants between 1940-1944, and they served with Commonwealth, Greek, Free French, Polish, Dutch East Indies, and Belgian units. It required a crew of three or four, depending on the variant, and had a top speed of 50 mph. The type featured South African-produced armor plates on Canadian Ford truck chassis with a four-wheel drive train produced by the American company Marmon-Herrington. Variants carried up to two .303 (7.7 mm) or .30-06 (7.62 mm) machine guns (or equivalent) protected by a steel shield, or a fully-rotating turret sporting a QF 2-pounder (40 mm) gun; field crews in North Africa also often modified the vehicle to carry a variety of captured Axis weapons such as Breda Model 35 (20 mm), 3.7 cm Pak 36, and 2.8 cm sPzB 41 anti-tank guns. This unit represents all of the variants armed with 7.62 mm (.30 inch) or 7.7 mm (.303 inch) machine guns.
