This open-topped 105 mm (L/22) self-propelled artillery vehicle was built atop the the M3 Lee and--later--the M4 Sherman chassis to provide mobile artillery support. Beginning in mid-1942, it served with Commonwealth units in North Africa and Italy, and then served with Commonwealth, Free French, and American units in Western Europe through the end of the war. They proved to be reliable weapons, continuing to see front-line service in the U.S. through the Korean War, and with other nations into the 1960s. Between early 1942 and 1945, the Pressed Steel Car and Federal Machine and Welder companies produced about 4,400 units in three main variants--all with the same gun, but atop different chassis. The type also carried one 0.5 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine gun. A crew of eight operated the vehicle. It had a maximum speed of 24 mph. This unit represents all variants.
