This self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon was equipped with four 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine guns in an M45 Quadmount. It was famous for its effectiveness against low-flying aircraft and infantry. American industry produced 3,550 M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage vehicles. The vehicle itself was the American-made M3A1 half-track, a ubiquitous utlity vehicle that served in all theaters. With about 53,000 units produced, the M3A1 was used as a troop carrier, artillery tractor, and reconnaisance vehicle; they were also fitted for use as self-propelled artillery, anti-aircraft, and mortar carriers. The type was an elongated version of the earlier M2 half track and had a maximum speed of 45 mph.
