The KV series of Soviet heavy tanks were known for their heavy armour protection, particularly during the early stages of the German invasion during which they were practically immune to fire from anything except the German 8.8 cm guns. For all but the final versions, its weaknesses were its weight, relatively slow speed (18 mph maximum), and lack of mobility. The main production models carried the same 76.2 mm M1941 ZiS-5 (L/42.5) main gun as the T-34, as well as two 7.62m DT machine guns; a crew of four operated the tank. The earliest variant of the type--Model 1939--carried an earlier version of the 76 mm main gun and were prone to breakdowns; Soviet industry only produed 141 units of this variant, and they saw service during the Winter War in Finland. These stats represent the standard ToI KV-1 unit, which for gaming purposes represents the primary 45-tonne variants KV-1A, KV-1E, KV-1B, and KV-1C (3,139 total units produced). The later-war lighter and faster variant--KV-1S--is represented by the up-gunned KV-85 unit.
