This British self-propelled artillery vehicle was based on the Valentine tank. It carried the 25 pounder gun-howitzer (L/28) in a tall, enclosed turret, which fired 87.6 mm (3.45 in) 11.5 kg (25 lb) high explosive or armour-piercing shells. A result of a rushed attempt to create a self-propelled gun of any kind, the vehicle had numerous problems. Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd. produced it in limited numbers (149 units), and the type was soon replaced by better designs. It carried a crew of four at a maximum speed of 15 mph. Designed rapidly in 1941, the type saw service in North Africa and during the Italian Campaign, 1942-1943. In 1943, the M7 Priest (105 mm) and Sexton (25-pounder) self-propelled artillery vehicles replaced the Bishop. The British Army diverted surviving Bishops for training in self-propelled gun tactics.
