The Associated Equipment Company (AEC) built a series of four-wheel-drive British heavy armoured cars during World War II. The company produced 629 units in three marks. The first version carried a Valentine Mk II turret with an Ordnance Quick-Firing (QF) 2-Pounder (40 mm) L/50 gun. Subsequent versions received a 6 pounder (57 mm) or 75 mm gun. The vehicle also carried one coaxial 7.92 mm Besa machine gun, one Bren .303 (7.7 mm) machine gun, a smoke grenade discharger, and a No. 19 radio set. It had a top speed of 38 mph. Commonwealth forces first used the Mk I in combat in the North African Campaign late in 1942, where a few vehicles were reportedly fitted with a Crusader tank turret mounting a 6 pounder gun. The Mk II and Mk III took part in the fighting in Europe with British and British Indian Army units. This unit represents the Mk I, with the (40 mm) L/50 main gun.
