On the early morning of July 17 1944, the 29th infantry took the high ground to the North of St Lo. Major Tom Howie led the 3rd Battalion of the 116th Regiment to the road that led into St Lo. Before they could come down the road into town, the Germans started shelling them with a mortar barrage.
Major Howie, who had instructed his men to close to use bayonets and hand grenades, was killed in the opening barrage. Captain Puntenney took over and called for artillery and fighter bomber attacks on the city, where the Germans had taken refuge.German troops rained mortar fire from the cemetary. Finally American tanks had come in and shot up the German troops so badly, that the rest left the town to the 29th.

That’s how I played it too. Pretty easy win for the US, as the Germans found it difficult to prevent the armor units from rolling into St. Lo.

You're right, I'm actually sorry I didn't comment on the match report, which, from the statistics, was won by the Germans!
It makes me think I adopted a similar solution to yours (ignoring the objective point on the hill).

I am struggling to understand the victory conditions for this scenario. It seems to me that the US forces will occupy — and retain control of — the high ground with ease. Not only are their starting positions nearby the high ground, but the US also has four armored units arriving at the end of Turn 2, firepower that the Germans can’t match. In other words, the US will be in a very strong position to claim at least a minor victory every game. A more balanced approach would have the US required to take both objectives to win the game. Am I missing something?
