Historical Background
After a few unsuccessful attempts at taking Nagashino Castle, the Takeda changed their strategy. They fired incendiary arrows from the north of the castle and burned Nagashino's grain storage. Without food, the castle would surely fall very quickly. An ashigaru named Toni Suneemon volunteered to break through the siege and serve as a messenger to Okazaki, where he could inform lord Tokugawa leyasu of the desperate situation at Nagashino and request his aid. Sunnemon successfully reached Okazaki and leyasu immediately coordinated with Oda Nobunaga to mobilize a force of more than 30,000 to relieve the siege of Nagashino. Unfortunately, Suneemon was captured by Takeda soldiers on his way back to the castle and could not deliver the good news to his fellow soldiers. The Takeda then promised him a handsome reward if he would lie to the defenders by telling them that reinforcement would never come, which would crush their morale. Suneemon agreed and thanked the Takeda for their generosity. However, when he arrived before the castle, he screamed "the reinforcement will come in 2-3 days!". Takeda Katsuyori was infuriated and ordered to have Suneemon crucified in front of the castle. This series of events, however, raised the morale of the Nagashino defenders to an all time high. Inspired by the Suneemon's news and sacrifice, they put up an extremely fierce resistance. The Takeda would not take Nagashino Castle any time soon..

Yuki's Post-Battle Notes and Trivia

• The heroism of Torii Suneemon (AgWOW9) was very well remembered and appreciated by his lord Okudaira Sadamasa ( VAM). He treated Suneemon' s family very well and ordered Suneemon' s eldest son to take the exact name "Torii Suneemon" in remembrance of his father. This name would then be passed down to the first-born son in each generation in the Torii family. In fact, Torii Suneemon the Second participated in the Battle of Sekigahara years later and captured Ankokuji Ekei (2Z-PgMtk), an important West Army commander.
• Okudaira Sadamasa himself also received recognition from Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu for his defense of Nagashino Castle. Nobunaga later offered him the character "nobu" and changed his name to Okudaira Nobumasa (ATait3), an honor reserved to the very few people Nobunaga considered worthy.
• You can still visit Suneemon' s grave today. It is located in Shinshiro city, Aichi Prefecture.
