Saratoga (2nd Day) - 9 May 1815

Historical Background
With victory at Plattsburg, the British Government decided to force the issue in the ongoing war with the United States and sent „The Iron Duke? along with massive reinforcements to Canada. In desperation, President Madison decided to send Andrew Jackson north to face the British advance down the old invasion route of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River. The two armies took up positions on the old Revolutionary War battlefield of Saratoga.
The United States forces, consisting of mainly militia stiffened by some regular US army units, set up lines along Bemis Heights anchored by an entrenched battery of artillery at The Point. Wellington’s forces of Peninsular veterans with the support of various Canadian units anticipated an easy victory against the poorly trained and equipped militia whose loyalty to the US was questionable. After a bloody repulse on the 8th, Wellington tried again to sweep the Americans away.
Based on the book “Redcoat?s Revenge” by Col. David Fitz-Enz printed 2008.
