Historical Background
The battle of Lützen was fought between the Army of Silesia, composed predominantly of Prussian and Russian troops, and the Grande Armée, commanded by Napoleon.
Ney's corps held the center, in bloody fighting at four villages forming a rectangle near the Flossgraben creek, intending to buy time and lure the Allies into fully engaging to allow a double envelopment to evolve. On the french right flank, a large allied cavalry force attempted to capture Starsiedel and deny the flanking maneuver. Girard shifted his forces to hold the hill between Kaja and Starsiedel and assist Ney. Marmont sent two divisions in to protect and hold Starsiedel and to initiate the flanking maneuver. His troops were composed mostly of conscripts and former naval gunners converted to infantry, who performed well given their limited training. A grand battery was established on the hill and pounded the Allied forces pinned in the center of the battlefield as planned to help win the day, which ultimately fell short only because of the woeful shortage of French cavalry in 1813.

There is no man more pusillanimous than I when I am planning a campaign. I purposely exaggerate all the dangers and all the calamities that the circumstances make possible. I am in a thoroughly painful state of agitation. This does not keep me from looking quite serene in front of my entourage; I am like an unmarried girl laboring with child. Once I have made up my mind, everything is forgotten except what leads to success.~Napoleon
