Historical Background
After the Spanish retreat following the Battle of Zornoza, General Blake gathered his forces in the Valmaseda area and received significant reinforcements from La Romana’s Army of the North Division and Asturian troops. Villatte’s French division had been isolated at Valmaseda while the main French army was retreating toward Bilbao. Blake took advantage of this situation to launch an attack against the French and regain the initiative. The Spanish troops descended from the heights and attacked Villatte, forcing him to abandon Valmaseda and retreat eastward. Although the French managed to escape, they suffered significant losses and left prisoners and equipment behind.
