Historical Background
Following the fall of the Central Junta and the French advance through Andalusia, the imperial forces commanded by King Joseph Bonaparte and his marshals launched an offensive against Seville. The city, one of Spain's principal political and administrative centers, became an objective of enormous importance for the French.
The Spanish forces attempted to organize the defense of the approaches to the city. Troops deployed in the west and center were tasked with delaying the enemy advance, while other units protected Seville and the crossings over the Guadalquivir. However, the French army had superior forces and advanced determined to penetrate the Andalusian capital.
The outer defenses had to buy time and wear down the invader, but the French objective was clear: break through to the heart of Seville and capture its most important symbol.
