Historical Background
On November 29, 1808, during the retreat of the Spanish Army of the Centre following the defeat at Tudela, General Francisco Javier Venegas was tasked with delaying the French advance to allow the main body of the Spanish army to continue its retreat inland. Venegas established a defensive position at Bubierca, in the valley of the Jalón River.
The Spanish forces, numbering just over 3,100 men, consisted mainly of infantry, with around 600 cavalry. Venegas decided to leave most of the artillery behind because the terrain made its movement difficult and could slow the retreat.
The French division commanded by General David-Maurice-Joseph Mathieu de La Redorte, with around 8,000 men, advanced against the Spanish position. The attack began on the Spanish left flank and progressively forced the defenders back. When the position became untenable, the Spanish troops began their retreat. The Spanish cavalry played an important role in covering the withdrawal.
Although the battle ended in a French tactical victory, the action allowed the main body of Castaños' army to continue its retreat..
