A bit of a paean to C&C Napoleonics' square rules - for the French at least, with the their cavalry out on the hunt for cards from the get go, more a lament for the British. Even so, the defenders were never without a response from their 2 or 3 card hand, and the French only hit home because their attacks were, in the end, well supported by infantry.

A more measured game, though still featuring French cavalry charges, their effect was mainly in stemming the British right flank attack and neutering the British centre Artillery. The British attacked everywhere but the French held firm, though only catching up in the second half of the game, ultimately winning the race for the final banner in a closely fought game.

Both games played with module v4.

no logfile as we played face to face. As a consequence, instead of facing the VASSAL die roller, I had to contend with Stephen's lego dice tower with the evil genie trapped inside. Well today the genie was on strike, and gave Stephen some of the worse dice I've ever seen him roll. Despite his neverending supply of Bayonet charges and First strike cards, being unable to hit made his efforts ineffective.
On the other hand, the normally intractable dice tower rendered me good service today, so whilst I struggled with Probe cards, I managed to kill units with a few good rolls. Particularly valuable was bing able to distract him from the center with a few good attacks on the left flank.

also face to face, with the French pressing hardest on their right, which swiftly ran dry of cards, but put me 3:0 up. Stephen slowly clawed it back to 5:5 (including a double sabres leader kill on St. Cyr), and there was a moment when a leader check could have won the game for him, but wasn't to be, and I finished it with 3 infantry hits on a 3 strength infantry that played Fall Back Leader. Clearly Stephen needs to refresh his sacrifice to the dice genie that lives inside the Lego die tower. I have concerns for the lives of his pets and eldest child..

Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever.

The match was a knife fight. Started on the French right. The Allies had better command cards and more pertinent tactics cards -- they started off with a Grand Maneuver. Some back and forth on the right played out. Then the battle flowed to the center. My had was full of center cards and pushed hard at the French. The British/Portuguese were able to position for a cav charge, then conveniently drew a Charge card at just the right moment. Using that with a "break the square" it looked promising but was not decisive. The French counterattacked and the score remained fluctuating but mostly even. Finally the action moved to the French left, score 4-5. The French tried to get all the marbles with a solid attack on weakened Allied formations, which was harmful but only gleaned one more VP, 5-5. The Allies countered with an attack on surrounded HC, who barely succommed to three different units melee and fire. Had that fight not been won, the French would have riposted for a win. Great match, great opponent! Definitely a skin of the teeth win, and I'd say the Allies had better cards in the main.
