Sounds very similar to the previous international tourneys. I guess the question I should have asked was how is the open tournament different from the international?
Short version.. it isn't different
Longer version.. the CCN Open was running from prior to 2016 when it emigrated to this site

In 2021, the Intercontinent tournament was introduced by Ben, which split the players up into small sub-groups based on Timezone

The inevitable problem with subgroups is getting even numbers in each group, so over 2022 aand 2023 as that tournament grew it transitioned back to the well tested Open format, but still called the Intercontinental. For 2024 it has changed name back to the Open,, cause it is a lot shorter to type amongst other reasons.. It also operates in cycles with the C&C Ancients Open, so the Ancients Open runs March to July, and the Napoleonics Open from August to February (excluding finals which is just the top
