Epic Friedland:

I designed an epic Friedland on BGG under CCN epic, I think after working on it and the research it actually works. Would someone here please lift it from the ‘Geek’ and put it in a file here? I am totally computer illiterate.... sorry

Epic Friedland - 14 June 1807


Historical Background

When Napoleon arrived at Friedland, Bennigsen’s Russian army was holding a four-mile line in what Napoleon determined was a very poor defensive position, with its back to the river Alle. In addition, the Mill stream bisected the Russian line which also gave Napoleon reason to attack at once. Around 5:00 PM Ney’s divisions advanced.
Opening a battle so late in the day surprised Bennigsen, forcing him to rescind his order to with draw back across the Alle during the night. The Russians would have to offer battle where they stood.
The Russian left became the scene of advances, counter attacks and swirling cavalry actions. Both sides committed reserves to these combats, but the Russians weakened their center to do so. Seeing the weakness, the French horse artillery commander forwarded his guns to within 60 paces of the Russian infantry, and at that range the Russians took huge casualties – Eylau was avenged. Bennigsen launched an attack on his right in an attempt to take pressure off his left and center, but the French flank held. One final attack by the Russian Imperial Guard against Ney did not succeed in stopping the French and only served to buy time for the Russian army to retreat. But for the inaction of Grouchy and his French cavalry, the Russian army would have been largely destroyed. As it was, Russian casualties were catastrophic. The outcome of the Battle of Friedland spelled the end of the Fourth Coalition.

Thank you for that, I haven’t really felt a need to change it, it isn’t “balanced” but no battle really is, is it? I picked up an original copy of Petre’s 1807 campaign recently and it validated my study of the Polish campaign. I’ve had a French/Russian victory mix of 5/2, with one French victory being a huge “2 pot of coffee 3 hour nail biter”. The French will win the field most of the time, but because of Bennigsen’s deployment, that really is a forgone conclusion.
I’m hoping to get this accepted in the map files soon. My next obsession is - Ordal Cross - Where muskets we’re king!

In general, in the EPIC scenarios tactician cards are NOT optional.

That is absolutely true, I always use the tactician cards. I at first was giving Bennigsen 4 command cards, and found it do-able, but so hamstringing the Russians I gave them that extra command card card as a gift..

So I would stick with the 6 command cards and 6 tactical cards for the French, and 5 command cards and 4 tactical cards for the Russians.

Here we play the Epic WITHOUT the tactician cards ... Such bad boys we are!

What does it actually take to "make the cut" and have a fan-made scenario on the site? I'd love to try out this one and log the play afterwards
