Square: beneficial or not beneficial?

In my games, especially Garcia Hernandez, the cavalry attacked the square format has received losses, but it received even more losses by infantry not in square!

Question: what is the advantage of putting a square?
If the infantry attacks in the normal way the cavalry, will have 4 / 5 dice and a possible counter-attack;
If the infantry is placed in a square, it will always attack first, but with only 1 nut.

Mmmmmm ...... I did not understand the rule?

Thanks,

GC

Are you missing that the square is formed when the cavalry attack the square? So instead of taking a 3 or 4 dice attack from the cavalry the infantry get to attack first and even if they miss the cavalry only attack with1 dice maximum.

That 3 or 4 dice attack would average out to a 2 block loss, meaning that a full strength infantry that doesn't form square is likely to only attack with 1 dice more than it would have had in square.

Well .......... the cavalry attacking strikes a square with flags, swords and infantry; the infantry in a square strikes with cavalry, sword and flag, but rejects flag.

I have the impression that the ratio is in favor of the cavalry attacking a square, while it should be the other way.
Or not?

Hehe, this was just answered the other day on BoardGameGeek.
cavalry-too-strong-vs-square

My answer was:
Well, when you factor in the bounce flag the cavalry's chance of damaging the infantry in any attack is actually 56%.

In isolation it looks like a Bit of a mismatch but there are a lot of factors in actual play that will make a difference.

- if the infantry bounce the cavalry then they are likely to be able to put a block strength volley into the cavalry on their turn.

- as much as you want to ignore them, adjacent units often come to the rescue with full strength attacks on the cavalry.

- risking that 33% chance when your cavalry have taken a hit or two is pretty much handing your opponent an easy victory point unless the square is completely isolated
