Can 'First Strike' and similar cards be played immediately after the defender has played 'First Strike'/'Infantry Combat First'/'Artillery Canister' card so that the two are effectively cancelled? To my mind the wording of the cards, which allow them to be played 'after an opponent declares a melee attack and before the dice are rolled' would allow it, since a 'First Strike' is by definition an attack - the rules indicate that neither side 'battles back' when a FS has been played. Similarly I would say that you could play 'Battlefield Smoke' - 'after a combat is declared but before the dice roll' - after your opponent had played 'First Strike' .

With regards to the first answer above. Are you saying that a single unit may have more than one 'First Strike' or similar card played on it in one turn as long as that unit is defending? This would seem to violate the one tactics card per unit per turn rule.

The issue of 'Battlefield Smoke' after 'First Strike' is addressed in the 'Battlefield Smoke' card discussion. It is allowed, as per R. Borg. There is slight but perhaps a significant difference between the wordings of the two cards. What are others' thoughts? For the lawyerly-minded it hinges on whether a 'First Strike' itself counts as 'the opponent declares an attack'. Personally I would say yes but I have heard counter-arguments........

I’ve looked into this before, going off the FAQ and separate threads. From that I conclude that either Battlefield Smoke or Leader Orders a Fallback might be played by the active (on turn) player in response to  First Strike type card by the passive player.  Of course, if the active player already declared a different tactician card for the combat, then too bad.

first strike etc, definitely not playable by the active player.

My view is that First Strike can only be used by the Defender, since only the phasing player can "declare a melee attack".
With the move of First Strike from being a Command Card in the Blue 70 card deck to a Tactician card, this limits the defender to 1 Tactician card, and ergo could only ever play 1 First Strike.

I do wish Tactician cards had card play timing instructions like the Samurai Battles Dragon cards and The Great War Combat Cards do

Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever.
