Melee vs Ranged fire

I'm new to the C&C system, so please forgive a possibly dumb question. When a unit is adjacent to another and ordered to battle, it has to melee; it cannot shoot, so no shooting is possible at one hex. Is this correct?
What is the difference between ranged fire at one hex range and melee combat? There seems to be no point to the stats for shooting at one hex, or am I missing something?

Right, if a unit is adjacent to an opponent, he must battle an opponent unit and this is called "melee".

All battles against an opponent, which is at least 2 hex away, is called ranged fire/battle.

And where you have read that an unit may "ranged fire at one hex range" in the rulebook?
Or do you heared this sentence only from anybody? ;)

I know only this sentence from rulebook!
A unit with ranged weapons battling an enemy unit more than 1
hex away
is said to conduct ranged combat (fire) at that enemy
unit (“target unit.”)

OK, thanks. It's my misreading of the rules. I was looking at the artillery fire table which shows 4 dice for one hex range, but now I realize it has melee underneath. Thanks for clarifying. :)
