Game 1
Javelin Thrower (French) 5
David I. (Allies). 8
Game 2
David I. (French) 8
Javelin Thrower (Allies) 7
A French probe in the centre led to a rapid retreat from Chicry and a line unit crossing the bridge with help of a bayonet charge. This was counter-attacked on the left flank by Lagrange, each side losing two infantry & a light cav over the next three turns, the FA finally being overrun on turn 6. At 4-4 the French were now out of contact wiith Prussian units on the bridges & the ford. Indecisive missile fire was followed by a fourth evacuation in the centre, Van Horn’s gallant men in Chateau-Thierry finally succumbing before the light cavalry made it over the river for 8:5.
Despite favourable cards & what I felt was an aggressive stance the French barely won in the second game. A forceful attack on the right flank was held up by fluky shooting which dispatched the GLC outside Blesmes on turn 1 but the Prussian infantry there were destroyed with help from a GHC during a strong forward movement in all sectors. Bombardment of the GHC was ineffectual as was the assault right flank from Ney. A counter-attacked cavalry charge was inconclusive but sent two LN into square on the Prussian right. Elan from the Prussians allowed a 10d ca attack on the GHC which succeeded as the LC evacuated. Von Pirch and his guns fell with their backs to the river to Ney's Young Guard. Van Horn and Yorck showed leadership by retreating to the bridges and a grande manoeuvre brought the guard artillery into Chicry and an LT into Chateau-Thierry. A brilliant counter-attack took two units off and loaded the bridges again. 5:4 to Prussia. Nansouty took command in the centre. An error was made and I rolled an extra die in a combined arms attack on the central foot artillery on the hill, which led to a bonus combat against a 2-block line on the bridge. If correct dice had been rolled the FA would have survived but been destroyed on the bonus combat and the LN on the bridge would not have been forcced into square (with the attendant loss of a 'Bayonet Charge' card). Leadership and an inspired Lagrange allowed 4 strong units to mop up both squares on the Prussian right and the weakend LT which had retreated from Chicry. I have adjusted the score by the two flags which JT should have gained by playing his 'bayonet charge' had we not wrongly allowed the FA to be destroyed, rather than retreated at 1-block and presumably destroyed on 5 die bonus combat.
Truly a pleasure to play against JT. Given the complexity it was a challenging scenario to play for someone who doesn't know the cards & unit characteristics intimately and I was lucky with good cards in both games.
