Round 5
EPIC11 Orthez (27 February 1814)
Mark McG (Allies) 14 banners, 59 blocks lost
Malty (French) 13 banners, 56 blocks

Long game over 3 sessions
Brits initial push up the left flank was reasonably successful, but ran dry, and foolishly, I mistook the EXIT instructions which wased some efforts. This was entirely countered by the miserable efforts of Hill's Division, which failed miserably to clear Orthez, or cross the river. They were effectively out of the game, which allowed the French to reposition to the Centre.

In the centre, after some long preparation, the Allied infantry moved forward, and were totally smashed. My only achievement here was demonstrating a clear pair of heels to the French.

In the final round, the Brits held the French away from victory by rushing cavalry into St. Boe's, and getting into the French 1 pointers.

Overall, a battle of attrition with lack lustre dice all round.

Round 2 Laon
Prussians started hot, taking the lead with the town on their right and driving the French right from the field to go up 10-6. The Prussian right froze from lack of cards. The French cav rode forth and put the Prussians into squares, up to 4 units at a time, and stayed with them, taking some attrition. The French inf closed on the squares, one on left and 3 in center. What really hurt was back to back Forced marches in the center for the French. Took one town on left, contested one in center and the OG and YG wrecked havoc in center for the win. No left flank cards for him put some of his best troops out of business.
Thanks to Mark for the game, Thought he had me on this one.

The initial careful success around Arthies got the Prussians cocky, and a Bayonet Charge on the Prussian left went very poorly, giving away the initial Prussian lead, and handing the initiative back to the French. All went downhill from that moment.

Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever.

Rd 5 Orthez
Red Current (British) 7 banners 56 blocks lost
Gonzo (French) 14 banners 52 blocks lost
Tough grueling match. British right and French left sniped most of game. Brits got into Orthez but could not hold. French 2FA GB controlled center while strong British left pushed forward. French saw better part of valor ande abandoned St. Boes, falling back on hill with Grand Manuever. French Froced March in center followed by Bayonet charge killed several units and leaders including on French left. British assaulting hills on French left baseline stymied with a Short Supply. French left LN with leader able to kill 3 successive British units on baseline, two in one turn with inspired leader decisive. Luck varied widely, no bell curve here. French generally had better luck and able to retreat crippled units. Thanks to Andrej for match and good sportsmanship.

Round 4 Mockern
mantra (French) 15 banners 24 blocks
kfan (Allies) 3 banners 48 blocks lost

The Prussians came out strong on the French left. They couldn't quite coordinate their assault and were steadily pushed back. The French started to push their right flank and were seeing some progress there until the Russians came sweeping down with a double cavalry charge that gave the French pause. Both sides tried to reorganize. The French were the first redraw up their ranks. They tidied up their left by ganging up on any Prussian unit that was at low strength and pushed on their right, knowing that even though they were beat up on their right the Russians were too, and that the French could afford to lose a few banners if they they in turn could get an exchange out of it. There was very little movement from either center. The game was play in just over 4 hours. The Vassal server went down, so there are 2 files. David was fun to play and have a few laughs with.

Round 3 EPIC09 Sorauren (28 July 1813)

RedcurrenT(Allies) 8 banners, 72 blocks lost
mantra (French) 15 banners 49 blocks lost

The first half of the battle was mostly on the French right. There were a lot of weak dice for the first few rounds. The French were able to eventually Bayonet charge the Brits who came down of their heights with mostly good results. The Brits reformed on the other side of the heights waiting for the French to push on that flank. The French decided to hold off on the push until their other sectors firmed up. The center got a little bloody at this time...mostly at the French's expense, but the French were able to soften up the Brits a bit. At the same time, the French were able to slowly get their cavalry wing on their left shifted to the center over the battle. The French using a center command were able to charge with their heavies and a light the Allied forces and also move their infantry in striking position (they were holding a Forced March card). The Allies squared with 2 out of 3 units attacked. The Brits tried to push off the Cav. with some success, and un-squared their units, but the play of the FM and the proceeding activation were too much force for the Brits to defend against. The French rolled really well on their last activation to take 5 banners in one round. RedcurrenT was a good opponent, fighting the French hard and the cursed dice (at the end).

Round 1 EPIC05 Raab (14 June 1809)
Mark McG (Austrian): 17 banners, 51 blocks lost
Hawkmoon (French): 5 banners, 59 blocks lost

A match played over 2 sessions 3 weeks apart, so neither of us had a clear recollection of the first session, but it certainly involved heavy cavalry battles on the Austrian left, with 6 out of 12 French units lost being cavalry of Horse Artillery, and 4 out of 5 Austrians the same.

The French infantry tried to cross the stream several times, especially in the centre and were repelled with loss each time. Ultimately the Austrians got 12 banners for units destroyed, 2 for Scout cards, and 3 for all 3 sections being free of French units across the stream.

Round 6
EPIC07 Bussaco (27 September 1810)
RiverWanderer (Allies) 13 banners, 50 blocks lost
Malty (French) 10 banners, 64 blocks lost

Scenario note: We noticed that the Vassal scenario differs from the CCN.net layout in that it specifies only the central hills as victory objectives. After checking on BGG and with the game itself, we played that all hills were valid for French at-start banners.

The game proceeded at a brisk pace with the French pushing against both flanks from the start. They found the British overall well-prepared, a good selection of defensive cards falling into the British hand throughout the game. The British took a big risk on their left by pursuing retreating units in force and suffered some losses because of this. However, they recovered cohesion and across the field overall, aided by some favourable die rolls, several French retreating units were snagged before they could escape. The French avoided attacking the British centre, where the defence was strongest. They came close to breaking the British left but were ultimately unable to take the hills in decisive force.

A close game, which even in the last French turn, might have gone the other way.
