601 Austerlitz (2 December 1805) Sokolnitz & Telnitz
Allies: Tarheel 8 banners (21 blocks lost)
French: Toganalper 5 banners (35 blocks lost)

My opponent stayed up VERY LATE at night to play this one on the other side of the globe, so my thanks! He played a remarkable game as the French.

Battle started over on the French right with a little CAV harrassment and some GRZ fire that caused significant injury. A little back and forth and at one point a French full strength LC got stranded just to the right of the hills on the allied side of the city, and was cut up. Otherwise casualties high on both sides, with the edge on the flank to the Allies, but barely. The city was NOT taken though.

Action went to the left flank where the French attacked swiftly with help of a bayo charge and caused much mayhem that seemed to have the Allies stunned into unresponsiveness. So, to distract, allies charged the guns. HC nearly took out on the first attack the central FA, but did so on the second attack a turn later, itself however getting reduced to 1 block thanks to lots of infantry fire. On the other flank, the Lancers crossed the stream, and weakened the guns there on the hill but were repulsed with 1 block lost.

A bayonet charge by the Allies had little effect on their right flank, but was very successful in the center and finished off a square on the left flank. A later attack with sappers on the central city however was met by a French First Strike, which repulsed the attacker.

The final turn saw the Allies send their 2 strength Lancers over the stream on the edge of the board to the hills on the french right and hit the one strength FA, with a kill, and then continue the breakthrough to attack a 1 strength LC for the final block to finish it.

Battle was close pitched, and the French did not lose any cities.

Fun battle.

Round 1 - 416 Laon - French Right (9&10 March 1814)

plainscape (Allies) - 9 banners 10 blocks lost
toganalper (French) - 4 banners 23 blocks lost

The French approaches the Prussian position and seized the towns on their right. But, this just opened them out to an all out attack by the Prussians who quickly seized both town hexes and crushed the French right wing. Unfortunately, the French were incredibly lucky and took out two Prussian leaders in the process. (I have literally never seen this happen in a game.) Then the French tried to activate their left wing to take pressure off the right. This was met with Prussian Cav that was really no match for the French and things would have gone much worse if the Prussian Cav attacks in the center did not go so well. In one final push by a Lancer and a Heavy Cav, they managed to take out an artillery piece, a leader and the remaining line infantry on the right, sealing the deal for the Prussian victory.

Round 6 - 504 Gohrde - (18 September 1813)
mantra (French) 8 banners & 21 blocks lost
Bangla (Allies) 1 banner & 40 blocks lost

The battle started with some quick ranged attacks from Steinker Heights. Within a few 3-4 rounds the French had 3 banners. Poor Bangla didn't have a center card to start so his Prussians in the treeline took a lot of damage in the first few rounds. The Prussians tried to shake things up on the French left with some combined attacks with cavalry and arty, but the French broke it up. Things started to cool after that with each side maneuvering with lots of exchange fire. The French trying to hold the hills and right started to push up their left and were able to secure Luben. The Prussian/Allied units on that flank only offered token resistance as most of them were spent in earlier clashes.

The Prussians, trying to draw off the French advances started to push the French right. The French were able to push back, but with a lot of attritional losses. To make the matter worse Bangla played the Rally card and gained most of his losses back. However, the French still controlled all of the hills (they lost one briefly, but were able to claim it back in the end). At this time the banner count was about 6 to 1 in the French favor. The quickest way for the French victory was to push hard on their left, deep into their badly mauled lines. Bangla shifted some of his forces into the area and counterattacked, reducing 3 the French units down to one block. The French seeing no way of saving these units pushed back, and with the aid of a +1 melee tactic card were able to gain the last banner. It was a fun game and became really tight in the end. The French were quite spent at the end of it.

Man this was a strange one. Yesterday I played this scenario as the Allies in another tournament, had perfect cards and even dice and won 8-0. Today, for the first 7 or 8 turns I had no multi-section cards, and no "written" cards. Started with only Flank cards, so couldn't even take a pot shot at the exposed French LT. Made for a completely different game and just goes to show how variable C&CN can be from one play to another.
I did make a couple of mistakes, borne out of frustration I think. Like the cavalry charge against his artillery. Even though I had 7 dice against the FA it was still risky, and it backfired.
Once the initial attacks had failed this game turned into cat and mouse, but Chris (mantra) always had the upper hand. By the time I had built a decent hand and knocked off a few of his blocks leaving some of his units ready to be killed off, he had me reduced to three cards and only in reactive mode.
Yesterday's game took about an hour to complete. Today's was at least 3½ hours, which shows the attritional nature of today's encounter. Well done to Chris though, though I am still somewhat in shock?

Just watched Laon with Marco and Steve. Think the French should have had an extra banner - the RI when attacked by the French LT took one hit, retreated two hexes for the first flag, but then should have lost two blocks for the second one on the baseline (not one). That would have killed it.
Interesting to watch though. Haven't played this one before, so was watching the Prussian play closely.

Yep, when I reviewed the game I also noticed.. Probably during the game action I thought about spending an iron cross counter, but then forgot about it... Also, in the middle of the game, if you notice, I forgot to use +1 die bonus given by the card for example... However it was a really good game, the French left flank is very dangerous in this scenario!
