BH11 Dresden - Day2 - French Right flank (27 August 1813) [OT2020 - First Round - 2nd game]

French (Kandras78) 8
Austrians (g1ul10) 2

Early French attack on the Left has forced the Austrians out of the village. Austrians were able to deploy their cavalry into a threatening position in the center. A French preemptive charge by their horse against the hills on the right threw back the white light units and managed to capture Gen. Mesko and his Horse Artillery. The Austrian cavalry took a bloody revenge whiping out a Chasseur and a Heavy formation in short order. The French cavalry countered with retreating the on Right and the Lancers running down an Austrian battery and a Light in the center. Hungarian Hussars trying to drive the Lancers back were scattered by a combined arms attack. Austrian foot moved forward but suffered casulties under heavy cannonade. Then a French Bayonet charge hit hard the Austrian lines causing a massive damage and slaining Gen. Liechtenstein. A desperate counterattack has been repulsed (2x Infanry Combat First) by the French bringing the battle to its end.

Luck was clearly favouring Blue in the most critical situations during the battle.
A special thanks goes to my opponent for his patience for calls interrupting both our games.

Log to be uploaded by Giulio shortly.

BH11 Dresden - Day2 - French Right flank (27 August 1813) [OT2020 - First Round - 1st game]

French (Gileforn) 3
Austrians (Soul1st) 8

The French attacked mostly in the center and managed to take a three to one lead. After the that the Austrians attacked several turns on their right flank and were able to turn the game into a victory.

BH11 Dresden - Day2 - French Right flank (27 August 1813) [OT2020 - First Round - 2nd game]

French (Soul1st) 5
Austrians (Gileforn) 8
The second game was played over two sessions. After the first session the Austrians were three to one in the lead. In the second session the battle raged on, mainly in the center section. The Austrians held the lead in banners and were only put under pressure when the French charged with the bayonet in the center. This was only moderately successful after which the Austrians secured the victory.

BH11 Dresden - Day2 - French Right flank (27 August 1813) [OT2020 - First Round - 1st game]

French(g1ul10) 6
Austrians(Kandras78) 8

A four hour long battle with Luck courting both sides with the fleeting illusion of imminent victory many times.
Initial cavalry action favouring the Austrians threatened the French Right to collapse. Even Murat himself has been forced to leave the field.
Successful French consolidation has been followed up by a devestating counterattack turning the flank with the infantry joining in.
Austrians trying to get to position suffered heavy losses but both Gen. Teste and Gen. Victor fell during a deadly bombardment. The French finally took the village in the center and a Heavy Cavalry under Gen. La Tour-Maubourg destroyed a battery on the Left prepering to fall upon the weakened Austrian infantry behind.
A desperate last effort charge by a full strength Austrian Line scattered a French Line in the center to carry the day.

My noble opponent will upload the logs.
I am really looking forward to play our second game.

Game 2
Mark McG (French) 8 banners
Stephen T (Allies) 4 banners

An extended match over 3 sessions, so I have very poor recollection of what happened. I recall some early aggressive Austrian moves that were decisively repulsed to achieve 3-0, and then a longish period of French hand building (think I started with 4 Probe cards).

The 2nd session started with a bang, the French force marching up the Left flank, which took a few banners, but lost about 3. Then the right flank cavalry moved up, and bitter struggle achieved some dead cavalry on both sides, but the French were 7-4

the 3rd session was a brief Austrian attempt to push the French away, but was insufficient, and the French quickly gained the last banner.

Game 2

RiverWanderer (French) # 6
Grecian Formula (Allies) # 8

The French started the attack on the right flank and was repulsed, then similarly in the center. Neither side rolled well, but importantly, the Allies seemed to have the cards they needed to check the French. Casualties mounted roughly equally on both sides, then late in the game, the French succeeded in taking the town on the left Flank after battering the Austrians with infantry and artillery fire. However, cavalry charges & long-range artillery attacks on the center/right flank secured more banners by destroying spent French 1-steppers that had been withdrawn towards the rear. The situation was just too precarious as the French had run out of suitable cards to press on. The Austrians forced a supply shortage and retook the town on the left, securing a bloody victory.

Game 1

MjrCatastrophe (French) 3 banners

Maxjoezach (Allies) 8 banners

The French made an opening cavalry charge on the French Right with some limited success securing two squares but at the cost of 2 Cavalry AND 2 Leaders due to lucky sniper fire. The French then made an infantry charge taking Teste (the town in the middle) for 1 turn, only to be retaken by the Allies. Bloody exchanges occurred in middle and the French left resulting in an Allied win.

Game 2

Maxjoezach(French) 2 banners

MjrCatastrophe (Allies) 8 banners

Once again the French cavalry charged on their right and secured 2 infantry squares. Although bloody the Allies were able to retreat a 1 block unit expertly avoiding a "bloody exchange." Allied Infantry from Teste moved out and contributed to the French cavalry losses. The French benefited from a "lucky" artillery order and moved a Foot Artillery into Teste holding it for the entire game resulting in the loss of a banner for the Allies. The rest of the game involved well timed tactical Allied infantry moves dealing out damage and unit losses. At one point , one Austrian unit targeting a French full strength infantry unit with ranged fire, rolled 5 hits. These sallies were combined with adroit retreats protecting a total of five 1 block infantry units. The French were never able to mount a massive Infantry Melee charge. The result was a well earned Allied victory AND overall match victory.

Game 2
jfardette – French – 4 banners
gotigerssc – Allies - 8 banners

Battle took place mostly in the center with the Austrians standing their ground. Intense fighting with each side exchanging blow after blow. Allies kept steady pressure on the French and was able to hang on for the win. It really came down to the Allies seemingly drawing just the right card when it was needed - and there were some good ones. Without those I would have been crushed in the center.

Again, a big thanks to Jim for being patient with me.

French cavalry won the day with very hot dice, which is the real story - French rolled hits and the Allies couldn't seem to get any. Fighting never reached the villages as the French pushed hard on the right and never advanced far in the center or left. Appreciate Jim showing me the ropes and being patient for my first game of Napoleonics.

Game 1
scipio1zama – French – 8 banners
jaboskov – Allies - 5 banners

I won the first game as the French, 8-5, and it was closer than it seems. (He lost 46 blocks and I lost 32.) I started with an attack on his left flank (with Assault Right Flank, Leadership Right and Leadership Any Section cards), but did not make the headway I thought I would. I eliminated his LC, GRZ and HA, but it cost me an LC, HC and later a LI on that flank, PLUS considerable damage to my other cavalry. I did play a rally card and rolled 4 yellow horses, getting two of my cavalry units back up to full strength and a third just one block short – great roll, just what I needed. I eventually had four of his Infantry in Battalion Mass or Square, but he came back when my right flank cards ran out and managed to get three of them out of hock. Meanwhile, he whittled my cavalry back down to 2- or 1-block units.
My cards were flat for a few turns, and I lost a LT, while he lost a CU in a battle back. Then a succession of Force March, Bayonet Charge and another Force March allowed my LI on the rear ranks to get into the action, and the French melee vs infantry advantage started paying off. I eliminated 4 of his LN in short order for the win. At one point, I took the village in the center, negating his victory banner for my having none of the villages, but he took that one back. On my last turn, I took the village on the left of the board, removing his Austrian banner once again. Good game, good opponent, good fun.

Some art traded shots for awhile. Austrians push onto plateau but take losses from range fire and pull back. French Cav manuever on right then Cav Charge. Although had some uneven luck, able to sq two non LN Austrians which greatly hampered his hand. Able to surround and kill unit and leader and HA kill a square until serious losses Grand Mauevered the damaged units back to the French line. French advance on Left against battered Austrian inf captured the town and eliminated enough for the win. Thanks to Charles for good game.

Game 1
Grecian Formula (French) # 5
RiverWanderer (Allies) # 8

The French opened with a cavalry assault against the Austrian Left. Austrians stalled for time until their Light Infantry Force Marched to cut off and annihilate some over-extended French Cuirassiers. Still the French cavalry came on but now the Austrian Cuirassiers could be brought to bear and were able see off the threat once and for all. Meanwhile, Austrians attacked in the centre, provoking a French response in force. Here the battle was more even, but earlier cavalry losses put the French under time pressure. The French tried to prolong the battle with a Light Infantry Skirmish taking the central town hex in the heart of the Austrian line; consequently, this noble effort was doomed, as the occupying force was weak and soon overwhelmed. A final French attack failed to gain the banner it might have and victory came to the Austrians in a battle-back.

Game 2
Player 2 (French): jaboskov - 8 banners
Player 1 (Allies): scipio1zama - 5 banners

Action began in earnest on French left with Austria advancing into a defensive line and the French attempting to weaken their position in and around Weissenwolf. After attacks and counterattacks, units on both sides were left depleted, but with the board largely unchanged. The battle then bleed over to the center. The Austrians inflicted heavily casualties as the French aggressively advanced into the town. In an attempt to relieve the pressure, the French assaulted the right flank. The Austrian cavalry vigorously attacked in return, advancing deep into the French lines. A French cavalry charge eliminated these advanced units. This good luck was rewarded with a successful French attack on the Austrian center, just outside the town. Sensing weakness on the French right, the Austrians continued to attack hard, but the French reply proved decisive. Banners: 8 (FR), 5 (AUS). Casualties: 39 (FR), 45 (AUS) - with no replacements for either side. Very grateful for the game with a skilled, patient, and kind person.

Game 2 Ekengren vs. Rand

Austrians - Ekengren – 8 banners
French - Rand – 1 banner (No villages occupied)

The French move first, advancing on the Left flank towards one of the village objectives, though French artillery are cut down on the plateau after a tentative advance. A tactical withdraw and reshuffling of their line by the Austrians allows them to pounce on a second French artillery unit that is smashed apart (also heavily damaging a horse artillery unit) in a cavalry charge. A counter charge by the French traps an Austrian Light Calvary and destroys it. However, four French cavalry units are overextended and in a Leadership +1 die attack, led by Mesko and Lederer, a French Heavy Calvary and it’s leader, Latour-Maubourg, are killed. The French right wing starts to crack, though they attempt an assault in return, the Austrians bat it away, giving the French a bloody nose for their efforts. Despite a Grenzer Light Infantry in square, the Austrians still have strong cards, playing a Command Any Section. Through a combined arms attack and skillful handling of Tactic cards, the French right collapses in the Austrian counterattack. Paris weeps.

8 blocks lost for Austrians, one leader (Latour-Maubourg) + 24 blocks lost for French with no villages captured.

Thanks again to Ekengren for the games, learned a lot with some discussion on strategy and tactics. I wish him well in the rest of the tournament and appreciate his time and gamesmanship.

Game 1

Nekengren – French – 8 Banners – 35 Austrian Blocks Destroyed

Rand - Austrian – 1 Banner – 17 French Blocks Destroyed

The French start with some repositioning and slight movement in the center. Elements of the French calvary deploy in the mud of the battlefield, and the damp weather begins to affect the Austrian artillery, as they misfire for the first of many times at the approaching French.

Supply issues force an Austrian Line to flee from one of the villages, but their place is quickly taken by a Grenadier unit force marching to fill the gap. The French advance is hindered by continually drawing Probe cards with Tactic cards hard to come by, though the aggressiveness of the French Right wing pins the Austrians in place along a hill line.

The Austrians have slight luck by enforcing some of their units with Unit Leader Reform, one a Line unit trapped in Battalion Mass by encroaching French calvary. Two Grenzer units, hampered by their lack of mettle in melee are smashed aside despite forming square. Two different Austrian generals, Mesko and Lederer, try to shore up the faltering Austrian Left flank, but their units are destroyed, and they are both forced to flee. Lederer had led an ill-fated attempt leading a Cuirassier group to try to hold back the French but they are quickly overrun.

In the center, the French are able to gain a strong foothold on a plateau despite the Austrian artillery catching them in a crossfire with a Bombard Card. Little to no damage is done on 11 dice. Damp gun powder starts to affect the Austrian morale…

In a counterattack, a French Line vaporizes an Austrian Light Infantry trying to help a Line unit pinned down by the French Lancers. The Austrian Left Flank collapses completely and combined with the destruction of a number of units in the center, the French score the winning banner. The French handily outmaneuver the Austrians in the field, while the Austrians can only hold their heads high that no French troops were ever able to hold any of the villages.

A rather crushing defeat for the Austrians as they are smashed 8 banners to 1 by the French, though technically no French units were destroyed. A thank you to Nekengren for showing me some rules I missed and his patience in showing me the ropes in my first game in a Vassal Napoleonics Tournament. I enjoyed the banter and I look forward to our second game, hopefully I can make a better showing!

- Rand.

either delete that file from the extensions folder, or expand the tree in the VASSAL Library and deactivate that extension and see how it goes.
