Historical Background
The Battle of Jaffa took place during the Crusades, as one of a series of campaigns between the army of Sultan Saladin (Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb) and the Crusader forces led by King Richard I of England (known as Richard the Lionheart). It was the final battle of the Third Crusade, after which Saladin and King Richard were able to negotiate a truce. Although the Crusaders did not regain possession of Jerusalem, Christian pilgrims were permitted entry into the city, and the Crusaders were able to retain control of a sizable strip of land stretching from Beirut to Jaffa.

- 2 Banners: Eliminate enemy Leader, or if Crusaders eliminate Ayyubid HC.
- 1 Banner (Ayyubid): Occupy all 3 Town hexes simultaneously.
- 1 Banner (Ayyubid): Per Citadel hex currently occupied.
- 1 Banner (Crusader): End an ordered move on the Ayyubid "K" baseline (score once per game).
Special Rules
Reduced Bow Range
- All bow units in both scenarios have a maximum range of 3 hexes.
Mounting & Dismounting
Instead of moving or firing, an ordered mounted unit may dismount (replace with foot counterpart of same block strength), provided it is not within 2 hexes of an enemy unit/leader. Foot units may remount under the same conditions. Mounting cannot be done in Town or Citadel hexes.
Restrictions: Ayyubid Heavy Cavalry (HC) cannot dismount. Crusader Foot Knights can never mount. LBC becomes Light Bow (LB) (max 3 can do this). MBC becomes Auxilia Bow (AB). LC becomes Auxilia (A).Leader Special Abilities
- Saladin's Reluctance: Saladin and any unit he is attached to may not voluntarily move adjacent to a Crusader unit. If forced adjacent, they must end their move non-adjacent.
- Richard's Ferocity: Richard cancels one Sword or Helmet hit in Close Combat. An attached unit gains +1 CC/Battle-back die and +1 hex of movement. Ayyubids cannot play "First Strike" or "Ambush" against his stacked unit.
Retreat, Panic & The Sea
* Ayyubids are subject to Retreat & Panic, unless Richard is eliminated.
- Ayyubid units retreating off the "K" Row roll 1 die: on a Sword, they are eliminated (Banner to Crusader). Otherwise, they restore to 4 blocks and go to the Off-Map Box. They may re-enter via a Section card + Inspired Token on the K row. Saladin never dies retreating off-map.
- Crusaders cannot retreat off-map. However, Richard may evade off-map. Roll 1 die: on a Helmet, he drowns (2 Banners to Ayyubids); otherwise, he returns at the end of the 2nd Crusader card play to any Row A hex.
Sudanese Medium Infantry (MI) Enforcers
At the end of each Crusader turn, roll 1 die. On a Sword, Helmet, or Flag (August 1st) OR only on a Sword (August 5th), the Crusader player takes control of one Ayyubid Sudanese MI. Move it 1 hex and attack an adjacent non-MI Ayyubid unit (excluding Saladin). The target takes losses, cannot Battle-Back, and receives no support.
Rallying the Genoese Sailors
Two Crusader Auxilia units start off-map. If Ayyubid units are in or adjacent to Jaffa (Wall, Gaps, Town, Citadel), Richard can rally them. If Richard ends an ordered move in a Gap, Town, or Citadel hex, roll 1 die: on Green, Sword, Flag, or Helmet, place 1 Auxilia in his hex (if empty) or an adjacent hex. Limit: 1 attempt per turn, max 2 per game.
