2C03 Battle of Laodicea (1147)

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The German king, Conrad III, crossed Anatolia with his army. The German army was divided into two, one led by the German king himself, which had the knights and infantry, while the second force was led by Bishop and brother of the king, Otto of Freising which consisted of infantry and camp followers.

The second German force took the coastal route through the Aegean Sea. They then turned to Alaşehir where they arrived at Meander River. The Germans did not have proper boats to cross the river, so they were forced to pass by themselves, which weakened and exhausted their forces. Weakened, they headed towards Laodicea up to Gediz River hoping to rest and gather supplies there. However the Germans were ambushed by the Seljuks, inflicting heavy losses on them. Count Bernard of Carinthia was killed alongside the majority of his men.

Special Rules
• The river hexes represent Meander River. Treat these hexes as Marsh.
• The Crusader player, when ordering units, may use one order from the Command Card and place a camp hex on any medium or Auxilia Crusader infantry unit’s hex (provided there is no other terrain in the hex). The unit in the hex may not move or battle. The camp may not be placed on a hex that is adjacent to a Turkish unit. Only one camp hex may be placed during the turn.
• Each Crusader unit or Leader that begins it's turn on the Exit hexes and is ordered can leave the map and count as a Victory banner each.
• If a Seljuq Turk unit occupies a Crusader camp hex at the start of the Turk player’s turn, before playing a Command card, the camp hex is removed, the Turk player gains 1 Victory banner and the Crusader Victory banner is lost.
• All Seljuq Turk Medium cavalry units are armed with bows. No need to place bow markers. Some Light Cavalry are armed with bows. Use the proper bow and non-bow Light Cavalry blocks for these different units.
