Historical Background

The Battle of Azaz was fought between King Baldwin II of Jerusalem's crusader forces and allied Muslim forces led by Aq-Sunqur al-Bursuqi, the Seljuq atabeg of Mosul. One of the bloodiest confrontations before the Second Crusade, the battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Crusaders, causing disturbances of power in the Levant and weakening Seljuk domination in the area. Contemporary chronicler Matthew of Edessa even states that the remnants of al-Bursuqi's army were chased all the way to Aleppo. The battle effectively lifted the siege of Azaz and prevented it from falling to Turkoman hands.

Special Rules

Crusader Armenian Allies

  • The Turcopole (TLBC), Medium Infantry, Auxilia, and Light Bow Infantry units are Armenian forces.
  • Leo I of Armenia can only provide leader support to these specific Armenian units in battle.
  • Other Crusader Leaders are permitted to support the Armenian units normally.

Seljuk Bow Distribution

  • All Seljuk Medium Cavalry (MBC) are armed with bows.
  • None of the Seljuk Heavy Cavalry (HC) units have bows.

Seljuk Shortage of Arrows

  • All missile-capable units in Seljuk Group #2 must begin the game marked as "low on arrows".
  • Whenever a unit from Group #2 fires its bows, the player must roll one die immediately after the combat roll.
  • If a Green, Sword, or Helmet symbol is rolled, the unit is entirely "out of arrows".
  • Mark the exhausted unit (Risk wooden pieces are suggested for this). The marked unit may not conduct missile fire for the remainder of the game.

Seljuk Retreat & Panic

  • If the Crusader player reaches a score of 4 Banners, the entire Seljuk Turk army becomes subject to "Retreat and Panic" rules for the remainder of the scenario.
  • Seljuk Light Cavalry units (both standard Light Cavalry and Light Bow Cavalry) are never permitted to use the Feign Retreat rule in this scenario.
