Historical Background

After the city of Harran was captured, Bohemond and Baldwin had a major falling out over who would be master of the city. This would prove to be their undoing, as a united Seljuk-Turk army, commanded by two Muslim princes, Jekermish and Soqman closed in on the Crusaders. The main part of the battle took place on the river plain, when Baldwin’s Edessans, instead of following their plan to draw the Turkish army into an ambush, would themselves fall prey for a Turkish feigned retreat. Crossing the Balikh River in hot pursuit of the Turks, Baldwin looked for a knockout blow. Too late did he realize that he had lost touch with Bohemond, who was hidden behind the hills on his right waiting to ambush the Turks. Baldwin now came face to face with almost the entire Turkish army arrayed before him. The Turks mounted a full-scale cavalry attack and although Baldwin’s Crusaders fought like lions, most were cut down before they could re-cross the river. Meanwhile, Bohemond had advanced cautiously and when he saw Baldwin’s plight, selfishly choose to save his army and retire from the battlefield.
