HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The first caliph of Islam, Abu Bakr, after restoring control of the Arabian peninsula, sent one of his main generals of the Ridda Wars, Khalid ibn al-Walid, to take over the territory of Iraq, under the control of the Sassanid Empire. Khalid sent a letter to Hormozd, the governor of Dast Meisan, demanding his surrender. Hormozd refused and marched 20,000 troops southward out of Uballa to defend the crucial road near Yamamah outside the city of Kazima. Khalid, however, circumvented Hormozd with his swift cavalry and instead threatened the nearby city of Hufair, drawing Hormozd back northward.
By the time Hormozd and his army reached Hufair, Khalid marched back southward to Kazima, drawing Hormozd away again and intentionally tiring the Sassanid army which
was marching back and forth on foot. Khalid’s mounted army rested while they waited for the fatigued Sassanids to arrive. Khalid let the Sassanids tire further for some hours in formation under the sun outside Kazima and finally marched his army from the desert hills to meet them.
