MT05 Gothic War

John appears to be the man to beat, with a score of 28 banners out of a possible 30. A high bar has been set.

Round 1
gdnuke (Goth) - 4 banners; 26 blocks lost
gotigerssc (Byzantine) - 6 banners; 20 blocks lost

We fought it out mostly on my center and right with my line splitting in two down the middle. I tried doing what damage I could at range but was fairly ineffective. There were a few really unlucky rolls from the Goths on my advance auxilia unit who just would not seem to go down. I plucked and scraped at his medium and warrior units until they were dwindled down enough to use a couple of inspired actions to get them off the board. Final medal came off the trapped LB unit in the hills on my left. Principius went down on a two die leader check. Appreciate George helping me knock the cobwebs off of this version again.

 

Round 2

toganalper (Byzantine) 5 banners won, 25 blocks lost

Byznatine side has pretty difficult situation in this scenario, as Goths are well positioned on the hill. Togan noticing this withdrew some of his troops so I had to move my warriors forward. After couple of rounds spend on maneuver, the carnage started with Warriors charging. The devastating Mounted Charge by Romans almost finished the game, but then, the so far still Goth cavalry rushed forward and get final two banners, killing Roman leader in the process.

Very balanced game, bloody, with some good ideas on both sides.

Swirling combat in center.  A game of cav charges with 2 leadership and CC for the Goths and a CC and CA for the Byzantines.  Byzantine lost 3 foot soldiers and 4 Byzantine units down to 1 block.  Could easily gone the other way.  Thanks to Renaud for the exciting game.

R2 Battle of MugellumSteve T Goths 6 banners, 24 blocks lostNick P Byzantines 4 banners, 27 blocks lostThe Byzantine cavalry advanced on both flanks, shooting on their right and destroying a Goth auxila on their left (0-1). The Gothic warriors launched a ferocious foot onslaught in the centre (3-1), which was countered by Besas’ right flank cavalry riding to support the Byzantine centre (3-3); which was in turn countered by a Goth mounted charge led by Boduila into the centre melee, including killing Cyprian with his troops (6-4).Thanks to Nick for a fun game. I’d not played him before so it was good to meet him. He had better luck with ranged fire, but that was more than balanced by my excellent cards, including several leadership cards, whereas he had mainly smaller section  cards.   

Round 4

Renaud (Goths) 6 banners, 13 blocks lost

vs Ben (Byzantine) 1 banner, 30 blocks lost

I started with a leadership action on my left bringing my heavy foot, warriors and auxilia to contact. It nabbed me 2 units, I think, and I survived the blow back, in part thanks to Ambush against his HBC with my Warriors (I scored 4 hits, but he could ignore 2). While I eventually did lose my heavies, my auxilia and warriors managed to clean that flank with the exception of Narses who escaped with a 1 block auxilia. The (almost) killing blow was a poor Cry Havoc roll on my part that nonetheless allowed me to move my 3-block warriors against his 1 block bows on the rea line and his 2 block heavies in the bonus attack, killing both. My warriors then survived an attack from his medium cav that had shifted from his right. In the meantime, after having shifted some of his troops to the left, Ben attempted a Cavalry Charge and a Foot Onslaught against my center and left, but scored no kills. Eventually Clash of Shields took care of the last banner against one of his MI.

I'd say luck somewhat favored me in this one.
