Round 1 - 1st Ramla
Banners Blocks Lost
Scipio1zama (Fatimids) 4 27
David I (Crusaders) 6 20
Very effective archery from the footmen early on blunted a two unit knight cavalry foray against the centre.
Fatimid heavies entered the fray and finished a knight unit but an inspired arrow-pocked one block HKC exacted revenge, capturing their leader & then eliminating a depleted infantry unit for 3-1.
Mounted charge in reply was only partially stymied by ambush after the heroic knights were dispatched to Valhalla ( I mean heaven ). Carpinel's knights finally fell to the medium cavalry on his left flank but he survived. Then it was the Crusaders' turn for some sharphsooting. DTS scattered one MC & destroyed another 3-block MC. 4-3. Then twin flags on an unsupported bow unit soaked up the last insp. action.
All seemed lost for the Fatimids as Baldwin rallied his last knight cavalry and his foot knights on the left flank but a series of unfortunate events saw Baldwin's foot units destroyed and himself at the mercy of
saad el-Dowleh's heavies. They elected however to try to destroy the last heavy Crusader horse unit just failing to do so. An inspired battle back failed to claim the required two hits and Saad el-Dowleh retreated to the centre 5-4. The final banner was claimed when a 1-block MC in the front line was cut off by Baldwin's retinue & cut down by the last skerrick of knightly manhood on the battlefield.
Quite the introduction to Medieval for me. Heavy knight cavalry are not to be trifled with. Thanks to Mike for answering my litany of questions at the beginning and I should note that we did not know the rule about Fatimids gaining +2 on battle bonus. It might have made all the difference.
