Final 1: 009 Callinicum (531 AD) Phase 2

stormwalker (Sassanid): 5 banners, 17 blocks lost
toganalper (Byzantine): 2 banners, 24 blocks lost

The battle begun with the Byzantines claiming the life of Cabades in a range fire attack. And so from the very start, rather surprisingly, the things looked pretty grim for the Sassanids. The Byzantines pressed hard and with repeated attacks managed to reduce all Sassanid cavalry units on the right wing to one or two blocks. However, those attacks took their toll on the strength of the Byzantine army as well. And then the good fortune abandoned the Byzantines. Two very unlucky Byzantine charges were countered with two attacks on the light Byzantine units, which were left in the back. As a result the battle finished with a Sassanid victory.

Many thanks to Samim for playing! We are going to announce the date and time of our second game soon.

The battle began with some distant shooting from the Sassanids right flank. Azarethes also send most of his troops to support Cabades. Then Azarethes together with his trusted heavy cavalryman and companions tried to finish the Byzantines Auxiliaries. The Aux hold up and then Arethos responded with a darken sky command Azarethes lost his own unit to distant shooting but were able to escape behind the hills. His companions also took heavy losses and retreated behind the hills to regroup. As the Byzantines tried to bundle up in the center section, the Sassanid right wing were shooting at a distance. Bellarius took with him a group of medium cavalry and attacked the foot units. The Sassanids after a succesfull rally of his heavy units, were able to finish the byzantines foot units. But Cabades even-though quite strong got trapped by the Byzantines cavalry with a Mounted charge. Luckily his unit survived from the initial medium cavalry attack and he battled back full force also adding the battle bonus (even though at the end it was not needed), he was able to finish his attacking unit, opened his was to unification with his army. This was enough for the Byzantines ( 5 banners) and they surrendered.

This was a very tense and fun final match. At the end it was 5:2 and 5:1.

Only one banner was the margin of winning the very first tournament of the Medieval era.

I would like to thank first to Richard Borg, to once again coming up with a great version of the Command Color System. Of course many thanks goes to Mark McG for arranging these great and fun Tournaments and to people like g1ul10 and others, who put great effort to the Vassal files.

Dear Mark, Many Thanks, as always for the great Tournament.
Medieval seems to be quite different and mobile to play. Any ideas about starting an. Open Tournament also for the Medievals ?

the Mini-Tournament ran through a great number of the published scenarios, and there didn't seem like a lot left for an Open.

I did flirt with the idea of having an alternative option Medieval scenario for the Ancients Open. Probably won't do that this year, but will consider again next year.

I actually was thinking about "Late Roman Empire" Tournament, which can consist of:

- three first scenarios from CC Medieval, so Utus River and Catalaunian Fields Left and Right wing
- three scenarios from Vae Victis: www.commandsandcolors.net/ancients/news/...from-vae-victis.html
- up to three EPICs (for sure one for final): Adrianople (378 AD) in two versions and Argentoratum (357 AD)

Very thematic tournament mixing two very close systems.
