Retreating towards Own Baseline in Satala Scenario

We played the Satala scenario (pg. 35 in Rule Book) today and had a question about which "baseline" is to be used by Sittas' detachment of four cavalry units.  They start along the baseline labeled "Sassanid" which is completely across the board from the "Byzantine" baseline.  When retreating due to a 'flag' die roll, which way do they retreat?   As gamemaster, I ruled that they have to retreat toward the "Byzantine" labeled baseline which is counterintuitive to an extent, putting them potentially retreating into an enemy attack rather than away from it.

The same could happen to Sassanid units attacked from 'behind' (so to speak) by Sittas' command.  They could end up having to retreat towards their attacker in order to get to the "Sassanid" labeled baseline.

How have other players handled this seeming contradiction?

Thanks,

Jim

you always retreat towards your own Baseline (unless a Scenario Special rule allows otherwise), so you played correctly.

Despite the concept of retiring away from the enemy, there is no refuge in the direction away from your camp, so consider more that the units is scattering and fleeing rather than retreating and reforming. So this in more a design of effect than physical activity design.
