Arabah Valley - 83 BC

Seleucid vs Nabataean

Historical Background
In 83 BC the Nabataean empire was expanding north towards Damascus, which was currently ruled by one of the feuding Seleucid kings, Antiochus XII Dionysius. Antiochus decided to strike back. With an army of 8,000 foot and 800 horse he marched down the coast of Palestine, where he overcame token resistence from the Hasmonean King Alexander Jannaeus, and then south of the Dead Sea into the desolate Arabah Valley towards the Nabataean capital of Petra. King Aretas III withdrew before the Seleucids until, with the Seleucids wilting in the ferocious desert heat, he launched an attack with a force of 10,000 cavalry.
The Seleucids fought hard, with Antiochus in the forefront of the battle, but when he was slain the Seleucid army collapsed, and routed to the nearby town of Karn, where they were surrounded and forced to surrender.
Damascus was now without a king, and so the city asked Aretas to be their ruler, and thus protect them from the ongoing Seleucid civil wars. Aretas accepted and the Nabataean empire reached it furthest extent ever. Aretas even started to mint Greek coins, and he became known as Philhellenos, which means 'friend of the Greeks'.
