BS08 Mount Uaush (714 BC)
In 714 BC the Assyrian king Sargon II embarked on his eighth military campaign, marching 600 miles north to deal with ongoing troubles with the Armenian kingdoms of Urartu and Zikirtu. In late autumn, through the difficult rugged and mountainous terrain east of Lake Urmia, Sargon marched on the Zikirtu but turned aside when he learned that Rusa I of the Urartu was coming to the Zikirtu’s aid.
Rusa formed up his infantry in a strong position at the mouth of a steep-walled valley on the slopes of Mount Uaush. When Sargon arrived at Mount Uaush, his exhausted infantry were still some way behind and unprepared for battle. To the surprise of the Urartu, Sargon immediately made a bold charge in his chariot, supported only by his cavalry.
“I plunged into his midst like a swift javelin….the bodies of his warriors I cut down like millet, filling the mountain valleys with them. I made their blood run down the ravines and precipices like a river.”
The Urartu were routed and Rusa, the horses of his chariot killed by Assyrian spears, made an undignified escape on a mare before the eyes of his own troops. Fleeing to the mountains, he took his own life in despair when Sargon sacked the holy Urartu city of Musasir.
