Historical Background
Following the Peloponnesian war, the city states of Thessaly in north eastern Greece began to vie for domination of Thessaly. The two most prominant cities of the time, Pharae ruled by Lycophron, and Larissa ruled by Medius, clashed in 404BC to esatblish which city would become hegamon.
Thessaly was a unique region of Greece where a hoplite class had not developed and warfare was dominated by cavalry. Thessalian cavalry were much feared throughout Greece and Alexander the Great would include this valuable arm in his army of conquest in Persia 70 years later. Both cities hired mercenary hoplites from central and southern Greece to add heavy troops to their armies, but it was their cavalry that remained the decisive component.
The two sides met on an open plain. Lycophron, with a possible cavalry superiority of 3:2 was victorious.
