Historical Background
A few years before the outbreak of the First Punic War, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily took place the decisive battle between the king of Syracuse and Mamertines, Italic mercenaries from Campania, which occupied a vast territory almost as current Messina. The two armies camped nearby, near the mouth of the river Longanos. Hieron II sought to fight in the narrow coastal plain to take advantage of numerical superiority of his cavalry, the king used to his advantage even hatred of its allies against Messane Campanian mercenaries who had driven after having occupied their town. Then secretly sent them to occupy a hill behind the enemy camp and ordered them to remain hidden and only intervene to battle began swooping behind the enemy!
