Historical Background
Following his victory at the Baetis River in 80BC, Sertorius joined up with his Lusitanian allies and began teaching the tribesmen to fight as Romans. Meanwhile the Roman Legate Lucius Thorius Balbus was despatched with an army to suppress the Sertorius led Lusitanian rebellion.
Sertorius proceeded to harass the Romans with hit and run attacks against their forage parties and supply lines. He used the natural affinity of his Spanish troops for guerrilla warfare in their own environment. Once Sertorius considered his opponents sufficiently worn down and demoralised, he offered them open battle along the Anas river. Thorius gratefully accepted, expecting his professional legionaries to be more than a match for the Spanish levies of Sertorius supported by a small Roman hardcore. Thorius was sadly wrong and paid for his mistake with his life, while his defeated army fled for the safety of Roman territory
