Historical Background
Threatened by the recent growth of the Greek colony of Cyrene, the Libyan allies of the Saitic pharaoh Apries requested assistance from Egypt in 570 BCE. Apries sent an army to curb the ambitions of the newly-formed Hellenic polis, and his Egyptian army clashed with the colonial Cyrenaican forces in a fateful battle near the city. Though few details exist, the Egyptian army was not only routed, taking severe losses in process, but defeated so soundly that rumors began to spread in Egypt that Apries had engineered the defeat to remove those critical of his reign. Upon the survivors return to Egypt, a rebellion soon spread that was to eventually remove Apries from power and replace him with the general Amasis within a few years.
