Round3

"The scenario in VASSAL is called 18 in the scenario list, or you can find it under the Fan scenarios, Jim Duncan (JD18)."

The drop-down list of fan scenarios was always an internal list, for module maintenance, lacking battle names and dates. From Vassal 3.7, it has been unnecessary to show the list so I removed it in the latest module release.

To find a fan scenario, use the Scenario Browser. I created some brief instructions on the Vassal module support forum for anyone who has not used this feature before.

Two quick matches played in just 1 hour (30 minutes each).
The sides, already close from the start, faced each other with no holds barred with the Roman side in the incessant and rapid search for the 6th VB.

Thanks Geoff for taking the time to organize the games despite having a 6 hour time difference.

Round 3 - Match 1

I will be away on a cruise from May 11-28, with limited connectivity. Please post any questions or problems to this discussion forum for earlier resolution.

Lunacab and I played our two matches on May 1st/2nd. Due to time differences, lunacab agreed to play at the early hour of 5 AM.

Round 3 - Match 1
Player 1 (Volscian) lunacab: 1 banner won
Player 2 (Romans) TTC: 6 banners won

The battle started with a weak Roman cavalry charge into the Volscian right, followed by some unusually accurate ranged fire from the Volscians and a weak Roman cavalry charge on the other flank.  The accurate ranged fire only served to anger the Romans, or incite their God of Cards and God of Dice, as two straight Double-Time cards, along with extremely fortunate die rolling (the first four rolls resulted in two dead Medium Infantry [including one from a BB), one dead Warrior, and one dead Auxilia unit); the second Double-Time activation was only needed to take one more banner.

Round 3 - Match 2
Player 1 (Volscian) TTC: 4 banners won
Player 2 (Romans) lunacab: 6 banners won

The second battle began with a Mounted Charge, and both Roman cavalry units attacked the Volscian flanks. The Volscians took the first banner, destroying one Roman cavalry with ranged fire. This time a Roman Double-Time card failed to be decisive in the center as the two forces clashed, and Volscian counterattack resulted in an early 3-0 lead. Camillus rallied the Roman forces and regained the initiative in the center, destroying most of the Volscian heavier troops and eventually winning the battle 6-4.

Round 1
Toganalper (Roman) - 5 banners,
Gileforn (Volscian) - 6 banners.

That was a good first move from Roman forces that hitted one warrior and then protected their lights infantry. Line attack by Volscian and some maneuvres resulted in small clashes in the center. Also light forces were prepared to the final strike that was not too much good as can be, but heavy Romans also missed and gave a chance to win. Very close game.

Round 2
Toganalper (Volscian) - 3 banners,
Gileforn (Roman) - 6 banners.

The game started very close to the previous one but here Volscian line attack ended in clash with Roman troops. Clash of shields made half a game then. Volscian had good attempts to come back, but final Roman attack with heavy forces was dangerous enough.

Thank to Togan for both fast and good games!

I added the last 4 games to the Youtube channel dedicated to the C&C:A OT2024 tournament.

The idea is to have a quick and easy way to consult the progress of the matches...
Let me know what you think.

Game 1

Player 1 (Volscian) – Milla – 3 banners won
Player 2 (Roman) – Mark-McG – 6 banners won

The Romans start with a cavalry charge on both flanks, causing several Volscian light units to retreat.  Ranged attacks from the Volscians push the Roman cavalry back behind the Roman line.  However a second cavalry charge by Rome destroys one of Volscian auxilia.  The Volscian leader then attacks and defeats the Roman cavalry on the Volscian left flank.

The Roman leader Furius transfers his leadership to the heavy infantry on the right flank.  The Volscian medium infantry in the centre march to attack the Roman right flank, killing one of Rome's medium infantry.  Furius then attacks back, killing a medium infantry.  Another assault by Furius destroys a further three Volscian units.

With the Volscians close to defeat, their warriors lead a last desparate assault on Rome's remaining cavalry, finally defeating them. A final assault by Furius and his troops kill a warrior unit, leading to defeat of the Volscians and victory to Rome.

Game 2

Player 1 (Volscian) – Mark-McG – 1 banner won
Player 2 (Roman) – Milla – 6 banners won

Rome lead the asault with two line commands, closing the gap between the two armies and routing two of Volscian's warior units.  Volscian's leader advances to fill in the gaps left by his defeated units, destroying one of Rome's medium infantry but taking heavy losses in return.  Rome counter attacks, killing a medium infantry and the Volscian leader's cavalry - the leader however is able to escape back to the safety of his troops on the hills.  Further attacks by Furius destroy a Volscian auxilia.

With the Volscian centre now largely destroyed, Furius advances his troops towards the Volscians in the hills.  An attack against a medium Volscian infantry results in a Roman victory.

I am having a bit of confusion with the JD18 scenario special rule which in the VASSAL module reads "At the end of the 1st Roman turn in which Camillus has moved that player draws 2 command cards and removes 1 random card from the Volscian player."

Is this meant to be a permanent increase to the Roman command to 6 cards and the reduction of Volscian to 4 cards?

Or is this meant to be a temporary thing where the players not draw or draw to get back to their starting command to 5 cards each?
