OT2021 Round 1

Round1 Game 1:
Germans (Mad Anthony): 3 banners won
Romans (Greg O) : 6 banners won

The battle started with a Roman light enticing a German Warrior off the wall, and the Light almost was elminated but a Roman counter thrust elimniated the Warrior for first blood.  The Romans consolidated towards the right flank.  Next the battle shifted to the right with a clash there that wounded units on both sides, but none were elimniated.   Again the Romans consolidated on the left as the Germans pulled back there, and the Romans picked off a weakened Light with missile fire from the tree line.  The Romans moved up in the center and the German Warrirs responded with a sally off the wall into the Roman line on the right flank.  The Romans took some heavy losses but no kills and they weakened the Germans in return.  An order Medium troops allowed a strong Roman response including cavalry to hit back for a 4-0 lead, but a Warrior with a single block and leader withstood a 6 dice Clash of Shield attack and yet another attack by a Roman Medium, followed by another round with two mediums.   The Romans couldn't get that one hit they needed until the 4th try when a Roman cavalry unit charged the walls and ended the fight.

The Romans advanced in the center, and the Warriors Germans surged off teh wall hopnig to take advantage of the fact no Roman leader was in the area and targetted an unsupported flank, elminatting two Roman units while losing 1 warrior block.  What followed was a series of agressive moves by both sides, with the battle moving to the right flank with a German wedge pushing hard.  The Romans surged onto the wall with a cavalry unit taking hold there in a empty area as the Germans plunged to the right.  The Romans hit back hard on the right, gaining a 4-3 lead, but there were several 1 block Roman units that were hit with a winner take all surge but the Germans who elimnated two 1 block units and got a lucky 1d leader kill to seal the victory.

Mad Anthony is a relatively new CCA player and he did quite well and was a great sport.   It's great to see new folks and I loko forward to facing him again in the future.  We used discord to play, so not as much text in the log to follow.

Fair bit of action fighting on the Roman Left in the woods, with the German cavalry pushing forwards into the trees. Critical moment was the Roman leader falling to a double LDR on that flank. The Romans tried to change the focus by double timing twice around the right flank of the German line, and although they got over the rampart, they couldn't remain there.
 
Round1 Game 2:
Germans (Mark McG): 6 banners won
Romans (LiamBN) : 4 banners won

Germans came straight off the rampart in the centre and the majority of the fight was here. Again a Roman leader fell to a double LDR result, but so close to the finish it hardly mattered.
 
Both games had strange dice, many doubles, and at one stage 4 LDR on 4 dice. Lots of RED die faces.

Hard game, everybody want to win. And could! But one mistake and u are loser. Last german move can be illustration for manual (how not to do)

Rome took wood, so i think it was key to victory! Germans forced to attack in the center, but Rome did not flinch. Round 1 Game 1

Rome started off aggressive and attacked into the woods. The Germans were fortunate enought to get right flank cards and respond over several turns. The Romans suffered the most casualties  before the fight switched to the center. There Germans then went on offence and used a line command to advance from the raparts.They suffered heavily early but eventually won out.

This time the Germans moved into the woods and used Double Time on the Roman right to send in the warriors. Three warriors were eliminated over the next few turns. More warriors were sent in and reclaimed the lead for the Germans. The  game ended when more Germans emerged from the woods to grab the win.

Two fun game with the first being closer than the banners indicate. Brad is a quality opponent.

A really tense battle, right up to the end-game.
The tribesmen began by pushing through the woods towards the Roman left flank.  The Romans countered by shifting Germanicus and the units around him left, and they quickly snuffed out the threat for the rest of the battle.  With the Roman light troops attempting to unnerve the several Warrior units along the ramparts, the the German leaders ordered a general advance into the open ground to put pressure on the Roman centre and sent the lights scuttling for cover.  Soon enough, the Warrior units clashed with the Roman legionaries and it was the latter who came off worse.  Germanicus being over on the left flank for the rest of the battle, and no leader to aid them locally, the Roman centre literally caved in under the pressure.  The Roman cavalry were sent forth to try and check the Barbarian advance.  They too came back having been mauled.  The German tribesmen around their leader on their centre-left were ferocious and had multiple chances to rout the Romans altogether.  But somehow the Romans held, and, with Banglius now getting into the battle, the legionaries won the battle on a battle back.  Fortune smiled on the Romans this day, when the Germans had done more than enough to carry the field.

The return match is scheduled for March 19th.

Roman dicipline and superb shooting capabilities won the day. Even last Barbarian cavalry charge was repelled.
 

Match 2

Bloody and even contest. First furious charge of Germans repelled but with bloody losses among legions. After that Germanicus advanced to the ramparts. Arminius tried to attack on the Right but was blocked by Romans in the woods. Last bloody battle at the  ramparts get victory to Germanicus and Rome by barely one block.
Romans have more Leadership and Line Command cards and well played. "I am Spartacus" card for Germans was disappointing. If not, victory could be quicker and great for Germans. In both battles leaders fought bravely but with luck, no one died.

An entertaining fight that took place in three distinct phases.  First, a battle in the woods on the Roman right, where the Romans claimed an early kill and entrenched in the forests, daring the Germans to dislodge them.  Then, a savage back and forth struggle in the center that led to 8 eliminated units and a 5-4 German lead, after which both sides withdrew to regroup.  The final phase was a renewal of the fight in the forest, where the German dice were more fortunate than the well-executed Roman assault, and took out the final unit needed for victory.

As Brent might say in his AAR, "Right strategy, wrong goat."

Brent began the action early in this barely 30 minute game, moving off the ramparts to catch the leaderless Roman frontline out of position and without dynamic cards.  He punched a hole in the Roman front, and was able to continually menace the disorganized Romans throughout the contest.  However, a critical leader hit and some timely retreat flags allowed the Romans to narrowly escape certain doom, and claw their way back to a very entertaining 6-5 win by chasing down a 1 block warrior behind the ramparts.

When you add an entry from the Tournament article, you can't add files. Only in the Forum. Why that is so is a mystery only the software developers or website administrators know.
