Round 3: JD83 Caudium (314 BC)

Samnite, Sharpe08: 5 Banners won, 28 Blocks lost
Roman, toddrew: 7 Banners won, 25 Blocks lost

Game was going according to plan for the Romans, when they got a little too greedy and whiffed on an attack against a Samnite HI. The bb scored three hits and a successful 2d leader check. The following Samnite turn involved a First Strike from the Roman side that also whiffed, turn ending knotted at three banners apiece. The dice continued to control the action, 4d getting four hits, followed by a 1 block LI allowed to survive a 5d evade... Card attrition begin to have its impact as well, allowing the Romans to weasel their way back into a 7-5 victory.

Round 4: JD48 Sutrium (310 BC)

Samnite, toganalper: 0 Banners won, 30 Blocks lost
Roman, MichalK: 7 Banners won, 12 Blocks lost

That was very historic battle. Samnites forces attacked on their left, with warriors, AUX and LI. Unfortunately, hills were unfriendly and after some skirmish both warriors fallen. In the meantime Romans attacked on their left with cavalry, annihilating one MC, but then withdraw.

Then Samnites started to retreat, and Romans had to leave their comfortable hills. Time provided by Samnite retreat was used by Romans to regroup for Double Time attack, which followed by one round, ended game.

The final result definitely does not reflects the difference in losses, as my causalities were at 12. Simply, the most vulnerable units managed to survive...

Round 2, AC10 Lautulae (315 BC)

Samnite, Tony: 3 Banners won, 27 Blocks lost
Roman, MichalK: 6 Banners won, 21 Blocks lost

Game was decided in the centre, although in initial phases most action was visible on both wings. Some poor rolls on both sides, and my two AUX are out of game. Then timed double time, moving result to 3-2. Then unlucky "Clash of Shields" and game was pretty over. Good, quick game.

Round 5, Bovianum

Travis - Roman - 7 banners won, 14 blocks lost

Sharpe08 - Samnites - 2 banners won, 32 blocks lost

Without a doubt, the Roman god of chance is to be honored for this victory. Apparently, the Samnites had somehow dishonored their own god of chance, and he made them pay all game with poor cards and poor rolls, while the Roman juggernaut was able to strike at will due to its own near-perfect cards and dice.

Got kicked off the server near the end, so here is the partial game log.

Round 4?: JD48 Sutrium (310 BC)

Etruscan, Tony: 4 Banners Won, 26 Blocks Lost
Roman, Todd: 7 Banners Won, 13 Blocks Lost

Romans played impatiently, and almost cost them the game after stranding Legate and the MC's behind the Etruscan line (didn't even capture the camp...) However, Romans were able to switch to the right flank, and able to one hit a four-block MI to garner the 7th banner before the Etruscan side could regroup.

Round , AC08 Capture of Neapolis (339 BC)

Samnite, Sharpe08: 4 Banners won, 24 Blocks lost
Roman, MichalK: 6 Banners won, 17 Blocks lost

Pretty close game, with some missed opportunities on both sides. Romans started quickly, dispatching one Samnite AUX to victory banners pool, but were rebuked with MC counterattack, 1-1.

I had terrible hand - 3 Left Section cards at the beginning. So I really cannot do much in centre and on right. Also, my units were under range fire. Then Samnite started to concentrate on my left. The only option was to prepare - if at all possible - for counterattack. My pre-emptive move forward with HI was crucial – although slightly risky. Strong Samnite attack started - but one 1 block Roman AUX survived - what allowed for counterattack. 3 more turns finished everything. Slight lead in banners by Roman were kept till the very end of the game. But we really had some rolls which we would not expect they will go so bad... (see Sharpe’s attack on my left in his las round…)

As I see it now, it seems lost blocks might be deciding factor who promotes to semifinal...

Round 2, AC10 Lautulae (315 BC)

Samnite, Mark: 5 Banners Won, 30 Blocks Lost
Roman, Todd: 6 Banners Won, 23 Blocks Lost

Very tight battle - thin margins on both sides as Samnite Warriors and Roman Medium Cavalry tangled on the Samnite Right/Roman Left early. The score stood at 2 Warriors vs 1 MC and 1 Auxilia, when the Samnite Lights took over the action, being able to attack both wings for several turns. The Roman right held up in the end, but was pushed right to the tipping point.

The game turned on a Spartacus play by the Samnites. A solid roll, activating four units, though not being able to involve the lone Samnite leader proved costly, as only one hit on the Roman heavies resulted from the 9d. The battle backs were more potent, halving the Samnite Mediums and completely removing the Auxilia. The following Roman play pitted the same heavies against the 2 block Samnite mediums, and first strike made its appearance. Only a 2nd hit on the heavies, who then recovered and wiped out both the mediums and a supporting full block Samnite Heavy.

It looked grave for the Samnites at 3-5 with weakened lights on the baseline, but the Light-themed cards were bountiful in the Samnite hand, and Move-Fire-Move was both a defensive and offensive play. The Lights on the Samnite right were able to make safe distance, while those on the left pelted the Roman right.

It was the last single-block Roman MC that eventually enabled the Romans to prevail. It survived 4d of ranged attacks and a 2d leader supported battle back, before the final clash was set up: the 1-block MC and 2-block HI squaring off against a 4-block Samnite HI. 2 hits from the MC, before it was finally cleared from the board by the battle back, followed by the game ending roll by the Roman HI.
