Match 1
Jarib (Greeks) 2 banners
RiverWanderer (Spartans) 5 banners

After a daring but ultimately costly cavalry foray against the Spartan left, the Spartans there advanced into melee against the Greek line which reinforced rapidly. Falling back, the Spartans held on barely, helped by a timely Rally. The delaying action allowed Aristodemus to launch his own attack against the, by now weakened, Greek left, clinching the win just in time.

Match 2
RiverWanderer (Greeks) 5 banners
Jarib (Spartans) 2 banners

A different. much faster game. The Spartan Medium Cavalry led the way with their own daring attack on the outlying Greek cavalry opposite them. Unfortunately, the dice gods were not supportive and this time the Spartans were the ones quickly dispatched by an enveloping return attack. Not to be deterred, Aristodemus followed up with a Double Time against the Greek left. The resulting battle was short and bloody and on the fourth turn of melee a much depleted Greek wing won the day, aided by Clash of Shields and the run of the dice.

Thanks to Jarib for two exciting games, notwithstanding some less than sparkling dice rolls that frustrated his attacks at key moments.

Round 1   619 Nemea (394 BC)

Match 1
Travis (Greeks) 4 banners
kwofford (Spartans) 5 banners

Ken played a very strong game throughout, and I was fortunate to avoid a 5-0 shutout. I did have some near misses and bad rolls, especially on a tailor-made opportunity for a Rally card (when will I learn...?), but overall Ken's planning and execution was the reason I found myself in a 4-0 hole after six turns. Once Ken got his hoplites engaged, his tactics were masterful at smashing apart my lines and driving my units back nearly off the board. I survived just long enough to draw a MC card, and came perhaps a single flag roll away from a tremendous reversal of fortune, but in the end felt lucky to have brought it back to a 5-4 loss.

Match 2
kwofford (Greeks) 2 banners
Travis (Spartans) 5 banners

Game two was a much different affair, and I had the luxury of a solid set of cards and good rolls to be able to employ my Spartans effectively. In the early turns, I was able to drive one of the MC units off the board with some fortunate ranged rolls, and as before, Ken seized the moment and smashed into my lines with a well-executed DT card. Turn 6 was again the crucial turn though, as Ken's play of MC drew some horrible luck (a single hit each on two 5d ldr supported rolls) and left his units vulnerable to my next move, which ended the match.

Spartans win both games

Totals

Travis 4 + 5 (9)
kwofford 5 + 2 (7)

In both cases the Spartans manoeuvred in order to make contact with their core infantries against the opposite left flank. The clashes simply showed different results…

Match 1

gotigerssc (Greeks) 2 banners

John S (Spartans) 5 banners

I have one ORDER MOUNTED and a LINE COMMAND in hand to start and a few weaker cards along with CLASH of SHIELDS. Justin advanced his LI on both flanks to use ranged fire with very limited success. I pulled my MC back behind in MH line and then drew another LINE COMMAND. I used both of those cards to shift to my right and advance on the Greek left. Aristodemus led three MH and the MC to hit the Greek right which was pinned against their baseline. But I only weakened a LI and MH while suffering 4 hits to my MH. Justin played CENTER LEADERSHIP and did kill off one of my MH but luckily, he did not bag another weak MH and his MC only got 1 hit with 3d against my unsupported MC whose BB scored 2 hits. Normally CLASH OF SHIELDS only yields limited results but I did have 3 units (including my MC) in contact with the enemy, so here goes nothing. My MC killed off a 1 block MC and LI and my other units two MH and I shot out to a 4 to 1 lead. Justin plays MOUNTED CHARGE but my FIRST STRIKE retreats one of his MH which was set to attack a 1 block MH. Justin does eliminate my MC. I then use my own MOUNTED CHARGE and finish off a 2 block MH in the center for the win.

Match 2

John S (Greeks) 4 banners

gotigerssc (Spartans) 5 banners

I start with two BLUE TROOPS, I AM SPARTCUS and a DOUBLE TIME. Early on my left MC takes out the Spartan MC and things are looking good. I use my DOUBLE TIME to hit the Spartan left-center. But my 4 attacks only takes out one MH. Justin plays BLUE TROOPS. He bags one of my MH with one attack and weakens two other MH. My FIRST STRIKE does get 3 hits on a MH. My BLUE TROOPS then hits the Spartan line and two more MH fall, and my lead is 4 to 1. But a Spartan DOUBLE TIME is able to attack three weak MH and bag them all and his last roll, a 1d leader check won the game. The old snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

Game 1
GomJabbar (Greek) 5 banners
EZPickins (Spartan) 4 banners

EZ's Spartans started with a feint of his MC vs my Greek MC pushing then all the way to the back line and 1 block remaining before having to retreat back. This will prove in the end to be the Spartan downfall. My Greek Hoplites massed on their right flank to avoid the 5-block hoplites and because of cards in hand. Once prepared the Greek played 2 Double Time cards in a row to devastating effect. The Greek and Spartan Hoplites continued in a fierce melee each ending up with 4 banners before the dust settled. Then there was a gap between forces. We each needed 1 banner to win. My lone Light was in range of the Spartan lone MC with 1 block remaining. I played Darken the Sky and thankfully on the second attack I got the blue triangle I needed to win 5-4.

Game 2

GomJabbar (Spartan) 5 banners

This time my Spartans played it cautious separating forces and grouping on the flanks. EZ again feinted with the MC and was successful this time taking out my MC. However his MC was overextended and easily surrounded and destroyed by my 5-block Spartan Hoplites. The the battle started in earnest again on the Spartan left flank. The Greeks tried a tentative advance forward on that flank but then retreated once they saw the block of Spartan Hoplites moving toward them. I had great Left Flank cards and my MHs moved inexorably forward. Again there was a fierce melee on the left flank and the turning point was the Greek leader lost. It was 4-2 for Spartans, looking bleak for Greeks when they tried a last ditch Mounted Charge. The dice were against him though. The MC managed to eliminate a Hoplite but stalled against the second one and a battle back eliminated the MC for the win.

Note that in the second game I noticed after reviewing the vlog that EZ (and I) forgot to add the +1 die for Mounted Charge which may have changed the outcome if a flag had been rolled with that extra die. EZ didn't want to redo the last part of the game and graciously let the result stand.

Thanks EZPickins for the games. They were quick and fun!

The Greeks split their forces to send out a detachment to deal with the Spartan Cavalry. Spotting a hole in the line, the Spartan's took advantage and piled into the gap, sending the Athenians fleeing back to their wives (wimps!).

In true Hoplite style, both sides waded into head-on-battle. The Spartans were the first to blink and duly overwhelmed by a tide of shields and spears.
