Round 4, Game 1, ArretiumSteveT, Gauls, 6 banners, 18 blocks lost.Gomjabbar, Romans, 3 banners, 28 blocks lost.
After initial manoeuvering, my Gauls attacked on their right flank with the cavalry and chariots, following up with a mounted charge, destroying a Roman MC and LI (2-0). Brad’s Romans double-timed the legions on their centre-left, destroying a Gallic MC and chasing away the chariots (2-1). The Gauls brought their centre right infantry against this Roman column, and then line advanced forwards. In the resulting infantry melee on that flank/centre, the Gauls gained the upper hand (4-2). Britomaris led his MI band forward, Metellus’ HI attacked without a hit and were subsequently destroyed by these Gauls, with Metellus fleeing the field; on the opposite flank the Roman auxila, out-numbered 2:1, held off a Gaulish warrior charge, and despite heavy losses, destroyed one of the two warrior bands (5-3). A desperate Roman follow-up attack with cavalry and auxila on their right flank caused damage but without destroying any units, and then Britomaris defeated the last Roman unit on the opposite flank, a one block MI (6-3). Thanks to Brad for a tough and exciting game (and sorry for that 0 hit with Metellus’ HI!)
Round 4, Game 2Gomjabbar, Gauls, 5 banners, 26 blocks lost.SteveT, Romans, 6 banners, 27 blocks lost.
The infantry of both sides advanced, and then the Gaulish cavalry charged the supported, non-evading Roman LI, who beat then back. My Romans responded to this scare by refusing their weak left flank. After this, the infantry of both sides resumed their advance, including with several line advances. After the initial central clash, Metellus led a wedge of the legions forward, breaking the barbarian line (1-2). The Gaulish left continued forward; one weak band detached and attacked Metellus’ HI, causing many casualties but were destroyed (1-3); while the main body reached the Roman right – but their warriors were up against the same Roman auxila who had fought so valiantly against them in the first game, with heavy casualties but no banners on either side here. Metellus’ centre wedge, now much weaker, raced to rescue their right and attacked the centre flank of the Gaul’s left flank attack, with both sides taking heavy casualties (3-4). Fighting on this flank continued, with the last of the Roman auxila here falling valiantly (4-5). The Gaulish right-centre suddenly double-timed forward on the quiet other side of the battle-field, taking one (and nearly another and final) banner (5-5). The last remnants of the Roman right, led by Metellus, attacked the last remnants of the Gaulish left, and gained the final banner (5-6).
Thanks again to Brad for a v exciting and hard-fought battle. The laurel leaves go to the Roman right flank auxila unit, who fought ferociously in both battles against repeated attacks from hordes of barbarian warriors!
