Another thriller.  Carth with no Center cards until late and paid the price with destruction of R wing.  All carth move to their left flank while Roman concentrates in middle.  With only 1 dector occupied by both players, lots of discarding.  Carth able to get 2 lights and one Roman cav whiloe down 5-3.   Roman inf close while Carth backs up.  Finally 2 Carth Cav Elephant charges gets last 3 medals, including one on 4 point hvy and the leader.  Very exciting close games.  Thanks Michal

Game 1
soul1st (Carthaginian) 6 Banners
beckerdo (Roman) 2 Banners

The first part of this battle took place on the Roman left / Carthagian right. The Romans fired on the Carthaginian elephants, causing a rampage. The elephants then attacked the troops on the ramparts with a mounted charge. The battle kept raging in this sector with both sides losing blocks and units. The Carthiginians then moved their line to the center part of the map. The Romans responded with their medium infantry and cavalry. The Carthiginians held and had a first strike card to help. They also managed to encircle a Roman cavalry unit and destroy it. The score was now 3 for Carthage and 1 for Rome. The Carthagininans managed to destroy one more roman unit and with the help of a double time card moved to some weaker Roman units and could gain two more banners.

Game 2
beckerdo (Carthaginian) 2 Banners
soul1st (Roman) 6 Banners

Again the battle started on the Carthaginian left / Roman right. This was inconclusive. Then again the battle move to the center of the map. The Romans destroyed one elephant unit. The Carthaginian line moved towards the Roman center. The Roman moved their medium infantry and cavalry into position for a final attack, withstanding the Carthaginian attack that followed. Now the Roman medium cavalry attacked with a mounted charge. The cavalry trapped the Carthaginian light cavalry on their baseline, scoring two banners. The Carthaginians retaliated, killing two Roman units and driving back others. Again the Romans attacked with their medium infantry and cavalry, destroying three weakened Carthaginian units.

The Romans started with missile fire against the elephants, which was ineffective. The Carthaginians responded with a Mounted Charge that got the elephants away from the Carthaginian line but led to the death of an elephant unit in exchange for a damaged Roman medium. The next Carthaginian play was also a Mounted Charge which killed the damaged Roman medium and allowed an elephant to attack Metallus and a Heavy on the Roman rear row. Several exploding sword hits killed the Heavy and forced Metallus off the map. The Romans killed the remaining elephants in exchange for a damaged Medium.

The next Carthaginian move was a Double Time that exploded from the middle of their line, hitting the Roman middle which had just finished killing the elephants. This led to a vicious melee which saw 3 Roman Mediums and a Roman leader destroyed in exchange for a Carthaginian warrior.

Final block count was 13 to 24 in favor of the Carthaginians.

Game 2
Player1 (EZPickens) 2 Banners
Player2 (Elitesim) 6 Banners

The Romans led off again with missile fire that caused an elephant to rampage, badly damaging the warrior behind it. The Carthaginians played a Line Command card to get away from the elephants but were not able to draw a left flank card for the entire game, which left their elephants stranded. One died by missile fire.

The Carthaginian cav on the right moved forward but did not do any damage while the Roman center moved forward and sorted itself into a better line and the Roman left side attacked, doing no damage but forcing the Carthaginian cav back.

The Carthaginian middle again erupted with a double time card but was unlucky, dealing much damage but not killing any units. The Roman response was similar but they got the next move and destroyed both warriors for no damage.

The Carthaginian right attacked the Roman left again and had horrible luck, losing the Medium cav for no hits. The Romans advanced in the middle and badly damaged a Carthaginian Medium inf. The Carthaginians played another double time and got a first strike off against the Romans with their Heavy inf but had very bad luck again

Some glaring errors in a few games. Firing in Mounted charge not allowed. And ppl forgetting to roll for rampage. And not ignoring flags when they can.

With a hopeless opening position - per history - Carthage was soon down one elephant with the remaining pair in dire straits. The Carthage left managed to recover with Warriors and Light Infantry coming to the rescue. However, on the opposite flank an ill-judged Light Cavalry foray followed by desperate piece-meal centre attacks ended in disaster for Carthage and 6:2 Victory for the Romans.

A very similar game.
An opening Darken the Skies did more damage through blocked Elephant retreats than to the Elephants directly.
Once the dust settled, the remainder of the battle played out mostly as a Carthaginian attack on the Roman centre. A lucky strike against a Roman leader was repaid by some appalling bad luck for Carthage at the end of the game, leaving Rome to pick up the 6:1 Victory.

Round 4 C3i03 Panormus (250 BC)
Game 1
Mark McG (Carthaginian) 6 Banners
David I (Roman) 4 Banners

An unusual opening in that the Romans had no Right cards, so the Elephants charged straight away, mainly to get them away from Carthaginian lines. One was eliminated on a 2d battleback, and another quickly thereafter.
Action then moved to the Roman left where the cavalry skirmished, which the Carthaginians had the better of. Carthaginian double time up the centre drove the Romans back, and eliminated a leader. Hasdrubal then drove the dagger home into a cluster of damaged units, luckily eliminating a 2nd leader.

Game2
David I (Carthaginian) 3 Banners
Mark McG (Roman) 6 Banners

A very much more circumspect game, with the initial Roman ambush causing minor damage, and David drew the elephants back away, and then covered them with his light troops, then warriors. A sustained Carthaginian drive on their left cleared the ramparts of defenders, and it looked grim for the Romans as casualties mounted, and the only card I could use in the centre was a Line Command. At 1:0 to Carthage, the Roman cavalry came to the rescue, advancing on the left, which required the Punics to take defensive measures. From that start, the cavalry pushed the Punic right, eliminated the cavalry, then the, which drew back the Punic warriors and Hasdrubal from the Roman right. A Roman MC was lost, but finally the Roman centre could spring into action, counterattacking forward, drawing back, then flanking the remaining Punic right for the win.

Game 1 bkmooney: Romans-6, gotigerssc: Carthagians-5               The game started with battles on the Roman right.  The lights showered the elephants with missile fire.  Two of the elephants charged but were quickly killed giving the Romans an early lead.  The middle game developed into repeated missile attacks wearing down units on both sides.  During these attacks both sides maneuvered their armored infantries into attack positions.  An initial assault by the Carthaginians resulted in the loss of both warrior units.  However, a second timely double time by Hadsdrubal gave them a brief lead and put them on the cusp of victory.  However, the counterattack by the Romans preserved their narrow win.

Game 2 bkmooney: Carthaginians-2; gotigerssc: Romans-6               This game was fought mainly on the flanks.  The game opened with the ambush of the elephants.  One was lost immediately while the others retreated to the safety of the rear.  Both armies maneuvered their armored infantries into position for an assault.  However, the Roman cavalry moved into position and assaulted the Carthaginian cavalvry causing quick losses.  The Roman cavalry then attacked the Carthaginian light infantry again inflicting heavy losses.  The Carthaginian infantry were finally able to take down the Roman cavalry units.  However, it was too late as a double time took out the last, weakened light infantry in the center.  Sorry can't get the log files to load for these games…
