Round 1

Game 1
gdnuke (Goths) 7 banners
scipio1zama (Romans) 4 banners

A very aggressive start by the Romans with a Cavalry Charge in turn 1 destroyed a Goth HC in the center, and damaged the other one, but the one that survived dealt quite a bit of damage in several battle backs. A major battle was joined in the center. The cards were pretty bland on both sides, but the Goth dice were superior.

Game 2

The Romans were quick learners and held back from close combat, but their initial ranged attacks were poor. The Goths advanced in the center, but lots of evasion allowed the Romans to prepare a counterstrike. A couple turns later the Goths were down those center HCs. The fight moved to the Goths left flank, but the Romans were equal to the task there as well. The Goths' cards were bland again, while the Romans were awash in leadership, first strike, clash of shields, and the like. The cards enabled the Romans to order more units, and the dice turned heavily Roman as well. This is not a forgiving game for a side with poor cards and poor dice, especially when the opponent is lucky with both. Mike was a great opponent, who played well with the bad luck he was plagued with, and a true gentleman. I think we both enjoyed this round and this scenario.

Initial volley from Roman LC achieved nothing. Goths followed with line command to force the LC away, which mostly worked. Then 1 round later Goths followed with cavalry charge by all four HC, which achieved very little, in fact eventually resulted in losing 2 HC between battle back and next Roman turn. So Romans led early on and through the middle game, and even eliminated a Goth leader on a double roll, but Goth action in the center prevented the Romans from exploiting a Double-Time card (only 1 Roman heavy was left) and a Roman attack on the right against a protective cordon of light troops around a 1-block Goth HC failed to achieve much and in fact eventually led to a MC loss. More action in the center-left of the screen allowed the Goths to come back and win a close match.

Goths endured an opening Darken The Skies, losing a Heavy Cavalry and putting another at risk. However, Fortuna turned away from the Romans after that. A resurgent Goth centre/left was able to press home a Mounted Charge and follow up attacks thanks to good cards and a lucky evasion; a single block Heavy Cavalry unit delivering the coup-de-grace on the Roman baseline at turn 6.

Romans had a similarly good opening as in the first game, this time trapping and eliminating a damaged Goth Heavy Cavalry unit as it tried escape to the rear. From then on, the Roman ranged units didn't seem to be able to miss, especially when targeting Warrior units. By mid-game, the Goths' left-flank Heavy Cavalry had managed to chase down some Roman units but their left-flank cavalry attack resulted in more losses, whilst Claudius advanced deep into the Goth right flank, taking two banners along the way to win the victory on turn 14.

Game 1
EZPickins (Goth)-5
kwofford (Roman)-7

Romans opened with a missile barrage, provoking a Gothic countercharge to the Roman left/center. Romans evaded and brought the  heavy cavalry under a barrage of missile fire. The Goths fell back as the Romans reorganized to move their cavalry to the right flank.  The Goths then advanced their own missile units to return fire.  The Roman cavalry charged the gothic left, killing a heavy cavalry and driving the infantry back. The Goths counterattacked the roman right, as the Romans tidied up their lines.  The Roman cavalry resumed their attack, and traded units with the gothic left.  The gauls charged the roman left, and a wild melee developed that the Romans came out a unit ahead on.  The Romans closed the distance across the front, pressing into the left and right wings of the Gothic army, killing the leader of the gothic right.  A clash of shield decided the game in the Roman's favor.

Game 1
EZPickins (Romans)-5
kwofford (Goths)-7

Romans opened with a reorganization, while the goths massed their heavy cavalry on their right. Romans charged the gothic left, scoring an early kill but were thrown back with a loss of two cavalry. The romans renewed the charge, bringing the kill count even. The Gothic warriors charged and were able to envelop a weakened roman heavy cavalry, but Aurelian successfully fled back to Roman lines. The gothic heavy cavalry charged the roman left, cutting deeply into the lines at the cost of a heavy cavalry unit. The gothic warriors and were able to envelop another roman unit on the right, scoring the final banner of the game.

It was a good pair of games but the dice were often unkind to John.

Game 1
gotigerssc (Romans) - 7 banners
TTC (Goths) - 3 banners

Started with some ranged fire and got a few lucky hits on the Goth HC, and then moved my LC in to surround them....that was a mistake. I ended up never eliminating either HC the entire game but did lose nearly all the LC in the process. Goths advanced their right flank but my left flank held out and beat them back. At this point I was down 2-3 and decided to go for the win with a mounted charge, and it worked thanks to a leader falling during the conflict. Had it failed, things would not have been pretty coming back my way.

Game 2
gotigerssc (Goths) - 7 banners
TTC (Romans) - 6 banners

This one started with Darken the Sky and I lost my two HC in the center on turn 1. Not to be outdone, my LB claimed a LC on a counter attack. Eventually, my warriors charged the center and we lost a lot of units on the ensuing back and forth where it was eventually 6-6. My light units came from behind the wagons with help of a depleted auxilia and LB to surround his HC and get the final banner. Close games both times and it is always nice to compete with a fellow Tiger fan.

OT Round 1 - 418 Naissus

 Game 2
BrentS (Goths) 7
Steve (Rome) 3

Steve was harshly handled by the dice and in the banner counts in these matches. I’ll paraphrase what we discussed after. While it’s not always the case, many of the best Ancients games mirror historical ancient battle. Tactical positioning and skirmishing until one side pulls the trigger and the battle quickly cascades to a result. Often that key moment pivots on one set of attacks, either breaking enemy lines or failing to do so, and the outcome depends on whether one side can press advantage or the other can rally from a setback. In this case, ironically, that pivotal moment was nearly identical but on different sides….a high odds Heavy Cav attack against a depleted Auxilia unexpectedly failing, leading to disaster.

Game 1

In this match the pivot came very early. Rome started with a standard Order Lights attack across its Light Cav line and the Goths, recognising the risk of sitting there and talking unanswered fire, immediately Double Timed their Warriors into the Roman Light Cav, forcing them to evade with block loss and threatening to pin them. Once the Warriors are committed they’re committed but maybe they didn’t have the cards to press on because there were a couple of rounds of ordering lights on both sides which gave Rome the breathing space to reorganise their lines and, crucially, pull Aurelian from the right onto a centre Heavy Infantry. The Goths did then push deep and hard into the thin Roman line with both Warriors and Heavy Cav. The critical moment came when a Goth Heavy Cav failed to kill a 2 block Roman Auxilia, which killed the cav and its attached leader on battle back. It went south for the Goths from there as Rome pushed both its leaders on Heavy Infantry forward and massacred the leaderless Goths, ending with four Spartacus boosted Roman units trapping a Light Infantry for the final banner. Dice and the resulting momentum in Rome’s favour really determined this one.

Game 2

This was a more balanced and interesting match up. A lot of tough and cagey positioning, move and countermove. Drawing an opening Mounted Charge, the Goths repositioned their central Heavy Cav toward the right and although they took some attrition from ranged fire were able to hit the Roman left with three have Cav, losing one of them but killing an Auxilia and forcing depleted Roman units to their baseline. While Rome was able to tuck those units in toward their centre and there was never any further major action there, the threat was always present and key to influencing what happened elsewhere. Within the first two turns I had two Double Times but may have been reluctant to use them too early after what I’d seen happen to the Goths Double Timing in our previous match up and delayed using them longer than I might otherwise have. After some jockeying and positioning of lights, including trying to get the units out from behind the Wagon Laager, which took time and didn’t really have any impact, I eventually dropped the first Double Time. Rome responded by attacking a 2 block Gothic Auxilia with a Heavy Cav and failed again….no leader death but it left the Heavy Cav pinned and two exposed cav on the Roman baseline. Now the second Double Time for the Warriors to kill all three. Rome took a couple of banners in response but Aurelian was forced to retreat off the map and the surviving Warrior killed a pinned Light Cav with a Clash of Shields to finish it.

Steve played very strongly as usual but a couple of key failed attacks opened the floodgates, particularly in the first battle. Thanks for some fun games. Same city, same timezone, same accent  so we voiced and there’s minimal text in the logs.

Round 1 Game 2

The Roman LC assisted by1 LB opened up with a Light Unit card and peppered the HC for only 1 hit out of 10 die rolls... The Gothic cavalry charged in the center but only moved its wing units forward. The charge didn't achieve much, and eventually the 2 HC in the center died off, one to a blocked retreat and the other to the inability to evade when attacked by a Roman HI (which underperformed) and a Roman AUX that sealed the deal. The Roman HI dropped to 1 block but was able to retreat thanks to 1 flag and then moved further with a screen of AUX in front of it. A Mounted card saw the 2 MC and HC on the right moved to contact and eventually gathered 3 kills (1 HC, 1 W, and 1 AUX) for 1 AUX loss. Finally, the left MC and 1 AUX, supported by the 1-block HI and more importantly Claudius moved to contact with a Gothic AUX already down 1 block and scored 3 hits for the final banner.

Thanks to Charles for 2 pleasant games. Luck was definitely not in short supply on my side.

Ram (Goth) 7 Banners

Mark McG (Roman) 4 Banners

Romans started off with the traditional Order Light troops to rain down a hail of projectiles on the front two Heavy Cavalry. 5 rolls of 2 dice later, without a single hit I knew it was going to be one of those games. The follow up Mounted Charge took two banners, including 3 hits on an evading Light Cavalry. To make matters worse, the majority of the mounted units charged to their right, whilst I had no Left cards.

The banners I did manage to take were on my right, with the Heavy cavalry under Aurelian. Meanwhile Claudius tried a Double time to break up the killing field on the left, and was decimated by a perfect 3 hits plus 2 flags follow up from Clash of Shields.

All in all, not my day.
