Match 1
BrentS (Alemanni) 6 - Mark McG (Rome) 4
Match 2
Mark McG (Alemanni) 6 - BrentS (Rome) 5
In the first match I went the early Mounted Charge and killed a trapped light Bow and unsupported Heavy Infantry. Mark responded with a Double Time that forced me back to the river and killed a cav there (no, I didn't read the scenario rules properly
but my Warrior was able to First Strike a Double Flag to force his Heavy Infantry back before it could do the same to him. I was fortunate to be able to use the mobility of my Warriors and remaining cav to finish off a depleted medium infantry on Rome's right to close out the match.
The second match was very unusual. I advanced my line and killed an Auxilia with Clash of Shields but lost a heavy, medium infantry and leader (the emperor!) on the inevitable Alemanni Mounted Charge. I thought it was over but then some weirdness. I played a Darken the Sky I'd been holding since the start of the game to kill a light, Mark Countered it to kill one of my Heavies, then I countered that to kill three units, which took me to 5 banners. So unusual for so many Darkens, for them to be so effective, for intense ranged fire so late in the game after the close action, and for it to decide the tie. I came close to taking the game by surrounding one of the isolated Alemanni lights but he was a tough little bugger and survived on 1 block, enough for Mark to close out the match next turn.
Couldn't have been closer. I remember this as a tight, nasty little scenario and it proved to be so again this time. Two very enjoyable battles, thanks Mark, and well played.
Brent.
