Match 1: BrentS (Rome) 6 banners - Carthage (Goths) 5 banners
Match 2: BrentS (Goths) 6 banners - Carthage (Rome) 5 banners

Two great close games of one of my favourite of all scenarios against a very strong player, as the tight banner count shows. The results hinged on some end game dice rolls and could have gone either way. Very enjoyable contests.

Match 1
This one was all played out on the flanks. Some very accurate ranged attacks caused some significant attrition, including a double red on my poor War Machine. When the Gothic Warriors moved against my left, I Double Timed away my outnumbered units to the very edge of that flank, killing the furthest Warrior there and forcing the Gothic Heavy Cavalry back to his baseline but Caspar immediately Mounted Charged him back, killing my Heavy Infantry and my leader on a 1 die check. I had been able to get my cavalry to this flank (their mobility being the key to this scenario for the Romans) and with only 1 banner to win, I risked my 1 banner advantage to send three 1 and 2 block units against a full strength Warrior. I lost my 1 block MI on battle back as expected but killed the Warrior with a Medium Cavalry for a 6-5 win. So close.

Match 2
This one played out entirely in the centre. Believing that the centre was the key, and that I should be able to take advantage of the poor Roman command of 4 to pin the cavalry before Caspar could mobilise them, I pushed my Warriors up early and paid the price for aggression, losing one immediately to a Cavalry Charge, but killed a Medium Cavalry on battle back. In principle this would still have been a sound strategy, as it had drawn the Romans out of their protective terrain and exposed them but it stalled because I had no centre orders whatsoever for most of the battle, despite my hand advantage. Some vicious fighting around the central hill, marsh and forest and we were both down to a number of 1 block units. Caspar had a failed First Strike but my own attack failed and it looked like Rome would win against the odds again, but luck landed on my side and I was able to take his final 1 block Auxilia with a Double Timing 1 block Warrior. So close and the dice decided the outcome here.

Thanks to Mark for picking this fine scenario and to Caspar for two great games.

Brent.

Match 1: Mark McG (Rome) 2 banners - Cavie (Goths) 6 banners

First match was over quite quickly, Dan couldn't miss and the Romans died like flies. I was lucky to get 2 banners.

Match 2: Mark McG (Goths) 6 banners - Cavie (Rome) 2 banners

Second match was the Goths trying to hit but not get hurt, and it was going well at 4-0 until the Heavy Cavalry charged. 2 dead Heavy Cavalry later, and the score stood at 5-2 and the Goths were looking for an opening, but eventually screwed up their courage and Double timed into the Roman line and took the 6th banner. I played the Spartacus card 3 times in this scenario, and out of 5d each time I got, 2, 2 and 0 orders.. I WORKED for this draw..!!

Travis and I just finished our game. He definitely won with a total of 12 banners vs my 7. (36 to 52 block lost) But we had some issues with syncing. So, here are the log files and he'll be writing the summary in an upcoming post.

Abrittus: Travis 12 total banners, plainscape 7 total banners

First game was very tight, once the Goths lost the momentum, the dice gods began to favor the Romans, who were able to survive just long enough to get some good cards and even better rolls, picking off the final unit with a long range archer strike. Romans 6-5.

The second game was similar in dice inequity, and the Gothic warriors crashing through the Roman right with murderous rage. Goths 6-2.

I thought I'd just remind everyone again that although you're welcome to count blocks, it's time consuming and you don't need to. This tournament format works differently to the mini-tournaments. Block loss has no bearing on the preliminary Swiss rounds of this tournament.

It may be relevant to break ties when we come to the elimination section of the tournament but even then you will not be required to count blocks except on those few occasions where there is a banner draw across the two matches.......and if you keep appropriate logs you can go back retrospectively and count blocks in those rare instances.

First battle
Tomek (Goths) - 4 banners; Stonewall (Romans) - 6 banners
Rushed and poorly supported attack on the Right flank met the Roman war machine and a capable commander. Even in the marches and outnumbered the romans wiped out the entire right wing of the goths. No emperor was slain nor eagles lost that day.

Second battle
Tomek (Romans) - 6 banners; Stonewall (Goths) - 4 banners
Decius Trajan lost his son in a terrible battle but won. The right wing stayed static almost the entire battle, as the Roman´s cavalry in the centre but the left was a prolonged tug of war. Very difficult terrain and many hard decisions.

Unfortunately I am attaching only saved pictures of the final onslaught. It seems that both times I was too carried away to take care to close the log file and not only save. Probably my opponent - the valiant Stonewall has a decent vlog file.

Match 1: scipio1zama (Rome) 2 banners - Michal K (Goths) 6 banners
Full swing attack by Goths on their right, with some good rolls, good cards and bringing reinforcements when needed - quickly allowed for 4-0 result.
But then Romans started to organize very tough defense line, so it took at least 30 minutes before we got 2 banners each.
Good cards for me I must admit, so Mike really couldn't have done more.

Match 2: scipio1zama (Goths) 5 banners - Michal K (Rome) 6 banners
What a tense game it was! First both sides started with preparing for attack and exchanging fire volley - completely different than in first game, where melee was present almost immediately. Then Goth moved on right, with unfortunate attack. Well countered by Romans, and 2 banners for them. Then well countered by Goths – 2 banners for them. And then again well countered by Romans!
Before last round it was 3-5 (in favor of Goths) but I just received Spartacus… 4d roll, trembling when rolling, but 3 units ordered, 3 VB won and game finished. Really, I did not expect the things will turn that way…
Sadly, I do not have log for second game as it seems despite me starting it, it did not save :(

Thanks to Mike for two good games.

And I am not sure if I should be to happy about two wins – it is most probably I will hit Brent in roster for next round…
