After several turns there had been only several ranged fire attacks and lights evading my cavalry. The Samnite right had advanced a bit. I seized upon a change to attack two BCH which could not evade my MOUNTED CHARGE. I sent my brave MC into combat but only could bag one AI on my left but lost a MC in return. I had hoped to take out two chariots but only got 1 hit on one with two 4d attacks with leader support. A few turns later more losses were taken on my right as 3 MC went down while I bagged two BCH. The battle then shifted to my left as the Samnite forces advanced to press me on my baseline there. I eliminated both HI but lost an AI and another MC. The game was nearly ended in favor of the Samnites but fell short. I then advanced a HI and aided by my last MC led by Fabius and killed off two 2 block MI to end the threat over there. Both sides consolidated – me on my left and center, the Samnites of their left. With the game tied 7 to 7 my DARKEN the SKY gets a hit on the first attack and a lucky double banner on the other and the leader on the one block LI cannot prevent that unit being lost and with it the game.
Match 2
TTK (Samnite/Gauls) 6 banners
John S (Roman) 8 banners
Game 2 / Once again several turns went by before any unit was lost. One of my LI took shelter in Sentinum but thought better about being attacked by 3d while only rolling one in return. So that unit fell back and survived the battle. I then used two of my BCH to hit a MC and it was wiped out. The battle continues on the Roman right and I do very well as in total they have lost 4 MC and a MI while I only lost two BCH. But the tide turns with a fury as the Romans play DOUBLE TIME and I lose four units in one turn and evade a leader off the map. I lacked any orders for the flank while I slowly watched the Roman juggernaut advance and crush all before it. It was now 6 to 5 in favor of the Romans. I had several good cards including DOUBLE TIME and moved my forces from my right and center to close with the Roman center forces. I used my DOUBLE TIME and killed off one HI and got a very lucky 4d kill on a MI and went into the lead. Better yet I drew FIRST STRIKE, so there is hope to pull this off. A Roman I AM SPATACUS orders a HI, AI, LB and MC. Luckily a 2 block evades a 4d attack with no losses and a 3 block MI survives a 4d attack with one block. But now there is a HI attack on a 1 block HI. I use my FIRST STRIKE which gets 2 hits but more importantly two flags. Fabius’s His must fall back. Had he been able to attack and get the very probable first kill, he would have had a 6d attack on a 3 block HI for the game. My His with leader attack an AI and with two attacks end the game.
I felt I had very good luck at key times in both games and both games could have very well ended with my very excellent opponent being the victor.
