Match 1
Gdnuke (Roman) 8 banners
Gileforn (Belgic Tribes) 4 banners

That was an interesting game with mounting charge in the first round, but as a result it gave nothing to Belgians tribes. Romans were good in maneuvers and in attacks with their cavalry on the left flank. As a result barbarian leader has been captured and all barbarian right flank became weak. A lot of attack on Caesar were finished with medium result. Caesar wasn't captured, but some banners Belgian tribes got at the end. So well played game by George and like a result it wasn't a Belgian day.

Match 2
Gdnuke (Belgic Tribes) 0 banners
Gileforn (Roman) 8 banners

The second battle was also interesting with different maneuvers and attacks, but with same filling - that was not a Belgian day. A lot of counter attacks by them, also on Spartak gave nothing. Four cards after six that is a challenge. One time there were just four free river hexes, all other were occupied by barbarians and Romans. Good attempts gave nothing to Belgians and as a result Caesar crossed "Rubicon" and finished the game on the other bank.

Thanks to George for both good nervous games and positive atmosphere! Good luck next rounds.

Game 1
SkunkyBeer, Belgic Tribes - 5 banners
    John S, Romans 8 Banners
    [attachment=2111]OT2025-3 John S (Romans) v SkunkyBeer (Gaul).vlog

The game starts with a promising Belgic assault on the Roman Left, and they jump out to a quick 3-1 lead.  The Romans are unmoved, and rally behind the river.  The Belgic Tribes try to force a crossing on both the Roman left and center, but the once-smiling Lady Luck is now looking rather dour, though she does grant one more banner.  Now the weight of the Roman MI and Legio X begin to grind them into dust.  Well past the point where the action is decided, we evade certain death long enough to grab one last flag.

Game 2
  John S - Belgic Tribes - 4 Banners
  SkunkyBeer - Romans - 8 Banners
  {No Log file available - hopefully, John can supply his}

The expected assault on the Roman left is slow to develop, and the Romans seem to be blessed with an inexhaustible supply of cards to activate their long range units.  The missile fire doesn't eliminate any units, but the cooks will have to figure out what to do with all the leftovers.  Meanwhile, the Romans are able to rationalize their lines and prepare for to drive for the Belgic camp.  The action that follows is very bloody, and the Romans gain the upper hand - aided by the untimely death of the belgic chieftain, and a second unit retiring off the field after an ineffectual attack to see off the MC occupying the camp.  The rumors of a vineyard in southern Gaul changing hands are never substantiated.  With the banner count now at 7-4 for the Romans, both sides desperately want one more banner (John to at least tie the match, and Joel to get a second full point).  Both sides will have their chance, but it is the Romans that grab the brass ring.

Match 1
rams1984 (Roman) 8 banners
lunacab (Belgic Tribes) 6 banners

a crazy game, when the tribes started to attack on their left, and they were able to inflict dangerous losses. Over time, the Romans recovered the flank and eventually slaughtered everything while taking the enemy camp. Tribes tried to counterattack, but it was finally in vain. Roman superiority was clear, and Caesar went to the heat of the battle to make it even more straightforward. Truly fun!!
(Image counters do not include the banner for the camp and the last banner for Romans)

Match 2
rams1984 (Belgic Tribes) 3 banners
lunacab (Roman) 8 banners

Similar to the previous one, tribes attacked on the right flank. However, luck was not on their side. They did some damage, but a lucky counterattack eliminated both leaders of the flank. The center was a one-side pro-roman battle, and everything collapsed. Luck on dices was one sided here.

Thanks for the games!

Round 3 Game 1
215 River Sabis (57 BC)
Dawnreader (Belgic Tribes) 0 banners
Mark McG (Roman) 8 banners

Always hard to take the favoured side first, since you have to play conservatively and minimise losses. A trickle of Roman 1 strength units pulled back from the Left flank, after the initial cavalry clash was decisive for the Romans.

The finale was Caesar crossing the river and getting 2 banners in one turn to win the scenario. He is a finisher..

ROUND 3 - River Sabis

Game 1

BrentS (Belgic tribes) 8
Scipio1zama (Rome ) 7

Well, I could describe a fun and entertaining game in detail but it was a very lucky and undeserved Belgic victory. Double Helmet leader kill on Caesar says it all (plus a 1 die kill on Labienus which I feel less dirty about….that’s the calculated risk of leading from the front). Enough said. The Belgae have some terrain advantage in this one but are up against it and need some luck but that’s a bit too much. All the initial action took place on the Roman left…..the Belgae decimated them there and after the death of Labienus should have been able to finish off the game by trapping the two 1 block Roman cav near their baseline, but never got cards to order their right again for the rest of the game. The rest all happened in the centre. The Belgae almost threw away a 6-4 lead, including Caesar’s death, but somehow contrived to lose 3 consecutive banners to go to 6-7, only clawing 2 back for the win on the last card play. Close and very enjoyable but an asterisk against that victory.

Game 2

BrentS (Rome) 8
Scipio1zama (Belgic tribes) 4

This was an interesting battle. The Romans sought to exploit their hand advantage immediately and advanced boldly across the whole line with a Leadership Left and Line Command. Caesar was bloodied in the middle and pulled back but the true intended attack was pushed forward by Labienus across the river on the Roman left. The Belgae made an aggressive counter there and hurt the Xth legion units badly but they survived, Double Timed into the Belgic camp, killing the Roman Cav on its baseline and forcing the attached Belgic leader off the battlefield. A 1 block Xth legion held the camp against a Warrior unit (sword cancel saved him) and took the camp hex victory banner. At 7-0 banners it looked like it would be over quickly but the Belgae weren’t surrendering. Double Timing Warriors hit back hard, finishing off both depleted Xth units and killing Labienus. They then forced the remaining lights, Auxilia and Cav back toward their baseline. At 7-4 it looked like they might still pull it off. The Romans hurried their nameless leader all the way from the right to left flank on a Cav unit to reinforce it while Caesar rushed to the river in the centre to divert the Belgic attention from his beleaguered left. A true diversion……had no cards to order him again….but it worked. The Belgae took the bait, charged him there and Caesar took the last banner on a battle back. The ability to perform this sort of feint, due to the hidden ordering mechanism, is my favourite aspect of Ancients. Doesn’t always work but did here.

Two really enjoyable and strongly contested battles, as they always are with Mike. Thanks for the games…..you deserved more out of them, particularly the first.

Brent.
