OT2025 Round 2 - Match 1

ZOCCHI  (Carthage) 1 banner
RiverWanderer (Rome) 7 banners

Cathage's right elephant unit proved a liability - causing blocked retreat damage from the first Roman volley and a subsequent standing volley lucking in with double-hit, giving early cheer to the Romans. On the opposite wing, things didn't go much better for the elephant there - a less than spectacular Charge and Roman Lights seeing off what was left without further damage. After this start, the Roman lines continued to firm up and reap steady progress. A bold infantry assault led by Hasdrubal gained a banner and gave Scipio a close call but luck remained on the Roman side to the bitter end.

After 2 quick (unsuccessful) attempts by the Romans to take out the Carthaginian elephants, the Carths launched an attack on their RF with a LT & a W, and the battle was joined.  The next Carth turn saw them roll double banners against a Roman LC with nowhere to retreat - bye bye.  Also, a connected line of infantry was established, and the next Carth card played was – Line Command! All 13 leg units were ordered – only 5 went left while 8 went right, incl. all the HI.  The next significant event was a Carth Darken the Sky, which got several hits on various Roman LI.  However, the continuing engagement on their left was a disaster for the Carth, costing them a LC, LI, MC, Warrior and Elephant, at the cost of a Roman MC.  Fighting shifted to the other flank, initiated by a Carth Double Time that took out a Roman LI.  But the Romans launched MI attacks on both flanks that eliminated an enemy Aux and the other Warrior for the win.

One observation is the key role that the Roman Leaders played in scoring many of the hits against the Carthaginians.  Also, my gallant opponent was plagued by dice rolling challenges.

Match 1

Bluesteel (Carthage) 3 banners

mmcdaniel17 (Roman) 7 banners

Match 2

mmcdaniel17 (Carthage) 3 banners

Bluesteel (Roman) 7 banners

As balanced a match as it gets with both players winning the same score line with the Romans.

Round one saw Carthage get out to an early Elephant-aided lead before some great positioning by Mark to play successive line command combos to decimate the Carthaginian centre and left no hope.

Round 2 saw some pitched battles involving leader units with Rome's medium infantry playing a decisive role on the final turn, with Scipio's unit landing the final, winning, blow. A razor thin margin that needed the last rolls of the dice to equal the first match score and thus end the match in a very creditable draw for both sides.

Quite a bizzare match that included brave lightss that stood against heavies and mediums. Medium cavalry bravely facing Elephants. Ofc these are personnel choices. Evasion fine is a tactical choice.

Units firing when opponents are in proximity.

Round 2 - SkunkyBeer v BigFriendBen

Game 1:
Carthage (Joel-SkunkyBeer): 4 banners
Roman (Ben-BigFriendBen):  7 banners

(Some idiot forgot to start a log file.  Not naming names, but maybe Ben will post).  The opening attempt on the Carthagian elephants was ineffectual, and both would give good service in the coming turns, with the one on the Hasdrubal's right single-handedly hamstringing the Romans opposite.  Unfortunately, that was the end of the good news for Hasdrubal.  At the end of the day, there were significantly more Romans feeding the crows, but they kept their banners and we lost ours.

Game 2:
Carthage (Ben-BigFriendBen): 0 Banners
Romans (Joel-SkunkyBeer): 7 Banners

The Romans made great sport of playing "Pin the Pilum on the Elephant".  Ironically, one Elephant block would survive the battle, though there many nearby Carthagian casualties with dinner plate-sized dents in their shields.  In general, the Roman missile fire was able to attrite a number of the forward Carthagian units.  There units weren't able to hold up to Marcius' advance later in the game.

Round 2

Game 2:
Carthage (RiverWanderer): 6 banners
Roman (Zocchi): 7 banners

Mindful of the resounding defeat of the first game, the Romans, tries to reduce the losses to zero, but having fewer shooters in position and not wanting to go into close combat, this game turns out to be a counterproductive game, which led to favoring the Carthaginian in the long run. At 5 to 6 to the final clash the best fighter was sent, who succeeded in the intent of not letting the light units flee by acquiring the last banner. A thank you to RiverWanderer!

Round 2 - toganalper v rams1984

Game 1:
Carthage (toganalper): 5 banners
Roman ( rams1984):  7 banners
 Game 2:
Carthage (rams1984): 5 banners
Roman (toganalper)):  7 banners

Similar score, similar start. Could have been different. 2 good games thanks to Togan Alper. Personally felt I should have held back but it was all even in the end.

Replying here to upload our games. Great games played by skunkybeer, with some very resilient elephants as the Carthaginians a brutal drubbing from him as the Romans. Good luck going forward!
